A Look Inside the Porn Industry

When I first decided to write a book about a porn star, I knew I was going to have to do extensive research to learn what being an adult film star is really like. For Hotline, book one in the Murmur Inc. series, I went “undercover” as a phone sex operator, but in Action’s case, I wasn’t willing to go quite that far for realism. That meant I had to get my information elsewhere. I hit all the usual sources: the internet, documentaries, and interviews with the stars and the people who film them alike. What I discovered was surprising, empowering, and sometimes depressing.

Porn stars have incredibly short shelf lives. Some of them only shoot one film and then never do it again. Many others last a mere month, while a performer who’s been in the industry for six months is considered to be at the end of their “life span.” There are exceptions, obviously. Jenna Jameson built a vast and long-running empire and starred in hundreds of films. But it’s more likely that the average porn star will burn out after about three months. This is due to a number of things: exhaustion, physical injury, remorse, STIs and more. It’s estimated that 80% of porn stars have herpes, and they are at the forefront of dismantling the stigma associated with STIs and sex work.

It’s true that there’s serious money to be made in porn, but generally the producers pay the most for new faces, and then as time goes on, you have to perform increasingly unusual scenes to make the same money. You can also get paid extra for doing “harder” stuff: anal, group sex, bondage, etc. People of all genders are paid more for gay porn than for straight. Thus, there is a lot of “gay for pay” in the industry, particularly involving men.

I touch on this a bit in Action, but I thought I’d mention here as well that for men, one of the worst things you can be is a “crossover”: a man who does both gay and straight porn. Because of differences between how the gay side and the straight side handle condoms and STI testing, being a crossover will put you on an immediate “do not work with this guy” list for many female performers. Again, there are exceptions, but as a general rule, if you’re going to go gay, you better go all the way. ?

You can actually make a lot of money in the industry by doing fetish work, some of which doesn’t even involve being naked! If any of you are considering a career change, you should think about that, ha ha.

I learned so much about the porn industry when writing Action, so I’ll touch on more of it later. Thanks for reading, and good luck in the giveaway!

Blurb

ActionPete Griflow is the last person anyone would suspect of being a porn star. He’s quiet, gawky, and can’t even talk to guys without turning red. But on camera, he’s a different person. In the porn world, he’s Jaden Prime, a coquettish power bottom who’s been tantalizing fans for over a year now.

Pete is in a rut, though, and he knows it. And what’s worse, his boss knows it. If he can’t reignite his passion for the biz, he’s going to have trouble paying his none-too-cheap college tuition.

When Pete is given the opportunity to star in a huge summer production, sparks fly between him and his costar, Kyle Darko. Kyle is Pete’s opposite: he’s daring, achingly sexy, and in love with the sex industry. Their chemistry is palpable on and off screen, but dating on a porn set is tricky. Even pros struggle to separate fantasy from reality, especially with a script dictating their seduction. But what’s building between them can’t be ignored, and it’s so much more than getting some “action.”

Bio

Quinn Anderson is an alumna of the University of Dublin in Ireland and has a master’s degree in psychology. She wrote her dissertation on sexuality in popular literature and continues to explore evolving themes in erotica in her professional life.

A nerd extraordinaire, she was raised on an unhealthy diet of video games, anime, pop culture, and comics from infancy. She stays true to her nerd roots in writing and in life and frequently draws inspiration from her many fandoms, which include Sherlock, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Buffy, Marvel, and more. You will often find her interacting with fellow fans online and offline via conventions and tumblr, and she is happy to talk about anything from nerd life to writing tips. She has attended conventions on three separate continents and now considers herself a career geek. She advises anyone who attends pop culture events in the UK to watch out for Weeping Angels, as they are everywhere.

Her favorite television show is Avatar: the Last Airbender, her favorite film is Tangled, and her favorite book is Ella Enchanted. She can often be spotted at conventions, comic shops, and midnight book releases. If you’re at an event, and you see a 6’2” redhead wandering around with a vague look on her face, that’s probably her. Her favorite authors include J.K. Rowling, Gail Carson Levine, Libba Bray, and Tamora Pierce. When she’s not writing, she enjoys traveling, cooking, spending too much time on the internet, screwing the rules, finding the Master Sword, guided falling, consulting for the NYPD, guarding the galaxy, boldly going, and catching ’em all.
