Today I am so pleased to welcome R.J. Scott and V.L. Locey to Joyfully Jay. They have come to talk to us about their latest release, First Season (Harrisburg Railers #2). They have also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving them a big welcome!

Today R.J. and V.L. have written some questions and answers to share!

I heard you’re already writing book 4 in this series? How many books will there be in the Railers’ series?

RJ: We have so many ideas. At the moment we are writing book 4 (more news on that below) and that is almost like the first story arc complete. We also have this idea for a spin off NA series (more on that below as well!). You can never write too much hockey!

VL: 148,908 at last count. I’m kidding. Mostly. We seem to have ideas on an almost daily basis. Most of them are amazing, but some might fall flat. Since we both are avid hockey fans and the season is about to start, I wager the ideas will probably triple.

How do you co-author, I mean, what is your process?

RJ: First off, there is a lot of typing in FB and Google Chat. We’re both constantly coming up with story ideas and the minute we think of any we share them. But the process is that one of us will write chapter 1 and send it to the other author. The person who receives it will read, make notes, edit, and then we chat about chapter 2. The second author will send chapter 2 to the first author and the whole thing repeats.

VL: This is a good question! Sometimes when we’re choosing models for the covers one will just resonate with one of us louder than the other. Generally we sit down and while we’re working out blurbs and other authorly things, we’ll feel the characters out and see who fits who. With the book we’re starting next, it was as simple as RJ saying, “Do you want X or Y?” I chose X and she got Y. We’ve been really lucky that the characters have worked smoothly for us.

Does Stan get his own story?

VL: He does. RJ and I just adore the gentle giant, and he’s become quite important to the team and series. Just last night I was running some dialog around in my head with Stan, Tennant, Adler, and Jared.

RJ: I had this image the other day of Stan sitting in a classroom in a tiny plastic chair improving his English surrounded by loads of others. Only they all fit in the chairs, but Stan is just too damn big. We had so much fun writing the blurb for book 4.

Is there any chance of a book for Jared’s son Ryker?

RJ: When we wrote Jared and gave him a hockey playing son, we wanted to show his playing career, and the idea for a college age series came out of nowhere. So yes, book 1 in a new series is out in April, and book 1 is all about Ryker.

VL: I’m SUPER excited to work on this one! Of course, I’m always excited to work with RJ. We giggle and poke fun at each other a lot, but we also seem to inspire each other. I think we wrote Changing Lines in little over three weeks, and generally the rest have run at about that clip more or less.

Question for both of you – How can you two be friends and support different teams? What happens when they play each other?

VL: We treat each other and our teams with respect. Also, we have plans in place should the Pens ever face the Rangers in the playoffs. It involves sharing images from one of my favorite shows -hot man kissing hot man – instead of jibes. Last year it wasn’t an issue *sighs* but this year, well, who knows. The Rangers are looking good in preseason!

RJ: What Vicki said. Also I’m new to this hockey lark, this is only my second season of following a team,  but boy do you get sucked into being a rabid team follower quickly! We tease each other about our teams, but we both respect the fact that both teams play really good hockey. (Pens are still the best though, no one tell Vicki!)

Five random things…

Coffee or Tea?

VL:Coffee

RJ: Tea

Favorite superhero

VL: I have three that are tied for first. Deadpool/Wolverine/Iron Man

RJ: Flash & Deadpool

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

VL: You hear those voices in your head? You’re not loopy. Those are characters. Start writing down what they say NOW. Don’t wait until you’re forty-something.

RJ: Just keep writing (and don’t sign with Silver publishing or ARe)

What is your spirit animal

VL: A cat. I like to curl up and nap.

RJ: A black lab. Because I too want to eat a lot and sleep all day… 😉

What is your favorite childhood book?

VL: My favorite book as a child was “Charlotte’s Web” hands down.

RJ: I think the books that changed my life (no word of a lie) were the Enid Blyton books I read when I was very young for adventure and heroic action. Then the Narnia books. The brotherly bonds, the adventure, romance, I loved it all.

Adler Lockhart has had everything handed to him his whole life. Cars, villas, cash, college tuition at the finest Ivy League schools. The only things he doesn’t have are parents who care or the love of a good man. Then Layton walks into his privileged life and shows him what real love can be like.
