Thirty minutes later, the adrenaline ebbed away from Casey as their rented four-wheel drive entered the highway. Martin was stretched face down on the back seat. When Casey looked in the rear-view mirror, the glossy top edges of the wings were visible as they caught the afternoon sunlight.

He’d managed to immobilize them by using the uninjured wing as a brace and then wrapping them together against his back as if he were binding a broken rib. Martin had sworn more in the past hour than Casey had heard in all their years together, and by the end of it, they were both drenched with sweat and Martin was faint from shock and pain. He’d taken the opportunity, while Martin was mercifully unconscious for several minutes, to manipulate his shoulder back into its socket and tie it in a sling.

Having to manoeuvre the fabric so it avoided the broad bulge of a pair of wrapped wings had been a puzzle Casey had never expected to face. However, by the time Martin regained consciousness, the job was done and it was just a matter of a short stumble to the car, and they were on their way as Martin fainted again.

A weak groan from the back seat alerted Casey that his patient had regained consciousness. He’d vaguely hoped he might spare Martin the bouncing and jostling of the trip home, but perhaps the quiet of the car might provide an opportunity to gain some much needed information.

“Martin, how are you doing?”

“I’ll live,” came the terse reply, muffled by the back seat. “Pain’s better than it was. I must say, you’re taking all of this remarkably well.”

Casey smiled to himself. “Thanks, I think so too. Not every day your partner sprouts a set of wings. I can count the number of times on the fingers of one hand that I’ve thought, ‘You know, I wonder if Martin’s hiding a set of wings under that beautifully tailored suit.’”

There was a brief laugh, quickly stifled by a gasp. “Don’t make me laugh, you sadist. But, fair enough, this is a lot to take in.”

“A lot?” Casey immediately regretted the touch of anger in the words and softened his next question.

“Where did they come from? Have you always been…this?”

After a moment’s silence, Martin began slowly, “Obviously, they’re usually not visible. No, wait. Visible isn’t the right word… Corporeal is closer. When they’re whole and undamaged, I can summon or dismiss them at will. Does that help?”

“Sure.” Casey nodded. “Invisible, magical wings…perfectly reasonable. But why?”

“Why what?”

“Why do you have them? Does everybody get a set and just… I don’t know… not get the instruction manual?”

“No. They’re an evolutionary glitch. We estimate less than one in ten thousand are born to the Avian species. That’s the name for it, by the way; Avian. Tends to run in families, mostly.”

“So…Leon?”

“Yes.”

“Are they…can you…”

“Can I fly?”

“Yeah.”

“Yes, Casey, I’m capable of flying,” he explained, a touch of pride to his words. “Not everyone is and keeping my bodyweight down and my fitness up helps. Leon hasn’t flown for years. Too much desk work.” He huffed a little laugh, taking care to breathe shallowly.

Casey stilled for a moment before murmuring with something like awe. “God, I’d love to see you fly. It must be amazing.”

Martin sighed. “Perhaps one day. I may never fly again, after this.”

“You will, Martin. If I have any influence on the outcome, I swear it. Why didn’t you tell me?”

There was a yawn from the back seat. Casey had found some painkillers in the glove compartment before Martin had fainted the second time, and from the slurring of Martin’s words, they were beginning to take effect.

“To keep you…safe…Casey. Not…safe…anymore. Will tell…you…later.”

Blurb

When you work with someone for years, you think you know them pretty well.

Casey Wicker and Martin Bishop are a British Secret Service team with a reputation for ignoring rules but delivering results. They’ve also built a tight friendship, with more than a spark of unspoken attraction.

While on assignment to Scotland Yard, Martin rescues Casey and exposes him to a life-changing secret. Martin is not what he seems, and now that Casey is aware of that, the knowledge most likely comes with a death sentence.

When a way to avoid the tragic ending is suggested, it may very well take more cooperation than anyone is willing to expend.
