Today I am so pleased to welcome Morgan Brice to Joyfully Jay. Morgan has come to talk to us about her latest release, Badlands (which I reviewed here and totally adored!). She has also brought along a great tour wide giveaway. Please join me in giving Morgan a big welcome!

Sexy Series and Crossovers

I’m a sucker for series.

As a reader, when I find characters that I really come to care about, and a setting that feels like a comfortable, familiar place, I don’t just want to visit—I want to move in and bring my friends. While I can enjoy a one-book story, I always feel like I’m hungry for more. (Of course, with favorite series, that can still be true after ten or more books!)

As an author, I enjoy creating characters and settings that provide the sort of experience I like as a reader. That means I gravitate toward series, so that more of the world and the personalities of the characters can show through in each book. I like to take readers deeper, expanding what they know about the location, the main and supporting characters, the history and the magic. Even when the books in the series can be read independently, I make sure that if you do read all of them, you’ll get to know the people and places better and have a real insider’s point of view.

Badlands is the first book in my newest urban fantasy MM paranormal romance series. Here’s the gist: Medium and clairvoyant Simon Kincaide owns a Myrtle Beach boardwalk shop where he runs ghost tours, holds seances, and offers private psychic readings, making a fresh start after his abilities cost him his lover and his job as a folklore professor. Jaded cop Vic D’Amato saw something supernatural he couldn’t explain during a shootout several years ago in Pittsburgh and relocated to Myrtle Beach to leave the past behind, still skeptical about the paranormal.  But when the search for a serial killer hits a dead end, Vic battles his skepticism to ask Simon for help. As the body count rises, Simon’s involvement makes him a target, and a suspect. But Simon can’t say no, even if it costs him his life and heart.

As the series goes on, readers will get to know Myrtle Beach as much as they will get closer to Simon, Vic and their friends. I absolutely love Myrtle Beach—it’s one of my favorite vacation spots—so I’m really excited about sharing all my top spots with readers!

I want to take you, the reader, to all my special places, even if I have to change a few names along the way. We’ll stroll the boardwalk together, and I can show you the Skywheel and the piers, as well as my favorite gift shop, the special foods I love to eat when I visit, and all the little things that make Myrtle Beach different from all the other seashore destinations.

Something else I love when I read? Crossovers where characters from one series run into characters from another series by that same author. So in the beginning of Badlands, Simon Kincaide gets a couple of phone calls, because as an expert in folklore and legends, he does research for the secretive people who hunt down things that go bump in the night. His first call is from Seth Tanner, who is the main character in Witchbane (my other urban fantasy MM paranormal romance series). The next call is from Mark Wojcik, who hunts ghosts and monsters in our Spells, Salt and Steel series (under my Gail Z. Martin name co-written with Larry N. Martin). Cassidy Kincaide—Simon’s cousin—also plays an important role in Badlands. She’s the lead in my Deadly Curiosities (Gail Z. Martin) series about haunted and cursed objects in Charleston.

For me as a writer, it’s fun to link fictional series together because it makes the world of the books larger and more realistic. I get to work with characters who already have depth and history. For readers who are familiar with the other books, it’s a hidden in-joke. Readers who haven’t read the other books won’t miss anything, but they might make want to investigate those other series for something to read until the sequel to Badlands comes out later this year!

I’ll be a Hosting Author at RomCon and a Supporting Author at Gay Romantic Lit Retreat in October, so please look me up and say hello!

Badlands is available in ebook on Kindle, Kobo and Nook and in print. We’re working on audiobook. Please also check out Witchbane, the first in my other urban fantasy MM paranormal romance series!
