Today I am so pleased to welcome Elle Keaton to Joyfully Jay. Elle has come to talk to us about her latest release, His Best Man. She has also brought along a copy to give away. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!
Hi, Elle Keaton here. Thank you so much for joining me today to celebrate the release of His Best Man, the latest in the Accidental Roots series and absolutely a standalone. HBM is a friends to lover’s story about two ‘regular’ guys who have known each other forever finally getting together. It was both heaven and heartache to write ‘His Best Man’ – they presented as fairly simple characters to me, until they weren’t.
To be completely honest I never had any plans to write HBM. I didn’t even know they needed a story. Someone kept saying – “but what about the fire fighters?” (Can anyone tell me when we first spot these two?) and finally, I caved.
As I mentioned HBM hasn’t been the easiest story to write, the biggest obstacle being I didn’t know the characters very well before I embarked and it took me a while to figure them out
As with all the Accidental Roots novels, His Best Man is about finding family or – redefining family, if you will. Travis and Rod clearly have family and not all of it is bad but they definitely aren’t the same kind of lost soils as some other Accidental Roots denizens – having said that I do think a person can have a reasonably supportive family and still be lost…sometimes the journey is internal and not external.
My favorite writing adventure for HBM was learning both characters are totally addicted to disaster movies. This was a new genre to me! Personally I lean toward spy thrillers and space opera. Until this summer I had never willingly watched any disaster movies. I’ve now watched quite a few and I think I can understand the allure, and am impressed that there are that many actors who actually get paid to be in these movies! (and people pay to go see them).
What was my favorite you ask? Well, in terms of sheer hideousness ‘Oceans Rising’ took the cake. Note that the female character is a) despicable. I had zero sympathy for her, if someone treated me the way she treats her husband I would be out the door b) high heel boots – the best footwear never, if you watch you will note the entire second half is in the aforementioned boots. Geo Storm was pretty bad too, eight-year-olds have a better grasp of science then those writers… I actually thought The Wave (Netflix) was pretty good and well-acted, the science was marginally correct as well. Plus it was filmed in Norway so the scenery was incredible.
What are your favorite terrible movies that you can’t help but watch more than once?
Thanks for having me today and taking a chance on His Best Man.

Blurb
Rod Beton and Travis Walker have known each other a long time; since the second grade when Rod was the new kid in town and Travis befriended him with Pokémon trading cards and a fruit snack. Apparently Rod’s easy. Since that day they’ve had each other’s back’s, bread and butter, biscuit and gravy…and so on.
Along the way, Rod fell in love with Travis. He’s been hoping for some kind of signal from Travis that he returns Rod’s feelings. When Travis announces his surprise engagement over Thanksgiving dinner Rod decides he’s done waiting for the impossible. He packs his belongings and heads for Skagit and a new life. Even if Travis suddenly decided Rod was the man for him would Rod be able to put aside his insecurities?
Travis always knew he was destined to take over the family business. As the only boy he’s expected to take the helm of the Walker farming operation, and he’s good at it. An engagement to a local girl he’s pals with seems like the perfect solution gets him mom off his back and ensures the family line — eventually. When his best friend abruptly leaves town Travis’s eyes are finally opened to the difference between what is expected of him and what he could expect for himself.
His Best Man is a standalone in the Accidental Roots series, a friends to lovers mm romance with an HEA. Bisexual/gay.

I have to admit, I have never watched any disaster movie or any other terrible movies. But that is because I hardly watch any movies (less than one per year). I prefer to read 🙂
I am not that much into disaster movies… as for really terrible movies, every time my partner chooses the movie, it is a really terrible one… No favourites here! LOL!
Congrats on the release, Elle. I love the cover
I like disaster movies, especially on rainy Saturday afternoons.
Thanks for a fun post, Elle, and best wishes for the success of His Best Man. I’m another one who now only rarely watches movies. I watched The Poseidon Adventure as a young adult; it may have scarred me for life!
Elle, I have read all the books in this series, love the stories. Did we meet Rod and Travis in Spring Break. The Wave was a very enjoyable movie with gorgeous scenery.
Most people would call Olivia Newton-John epic XANADU terrible, and it does have several hallmarks of that (insane plot, surly wooden hero, crazy animated sequence clearly substituting for a sex scene). Nevertheless, I love the music, Gene Kelly is charming if criminally underused, and the epic finale in the roller rink is completely mesmerizing. I also have watched very odd low-budget Western movie WESTERN RELIGION far more often than I’d admit, because I have a fierce crush on Miles Szanto and his peace-loving gunslinger character is rather dreamy. Weirdly, I have much more tolerance for truly terrible TV shows for some reason.
So looking forward to this one! I’ve loved all the others and friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes.
I am looking forward to this book! I think I like watching bad horror movies. I sometimes get sucked in and I think it’s so dumb but then it’s time to go to bed and I’m scared! The Ring is a favorite of mine! Congratulations on the release!
I know there are many terrible movies that I love to watch but I can’t think of any right now. Probably many of the 1950s sci fi movies would be among them. The book sounds great.
I have watched some disaster movies – mainly ones set on the ocean
This is funny, because I love disaster movies. I watched all I could as a child (Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure) and have seen tons of made for TV disasters too. Tornadoes, Hail, Floods…bring it on. 🙂
This sounds like a really great read with some angst involved. I don’t really like bad movies but do watch them since my niece and nephews enjoy them. Sharknado was one the movies I sat through because they enjoyed it.
Friends to lovers is a favorite trope of mine so I’m looking forward to this one. Congratulations on the new release & thank you for the chance.
This sounds like a great book, I’m looking forward to it!
Everyone in my family loved Dante’s Inferno when it came out, and to this day most of us won’t admit that if you look at the quality of the dialog, or the special effects, or the plot…it’s really not that great.
I’m not a big fan of disaster movies, just not my cup of tea. This book sounds like it is, though!
I gotta say I don’t usually watch terrible movies over again, but I think I’ve seen Mulholland Drive and couple of times, and honestly – it’s not good.
