Soundtrack Time!

Hello, and happy new year! I’m here to celebrate the release book 3 in my Superpowered Love series, NOBODY’S HERO, but also the rebirth of the whole series. It’s been a long and exciting road, but here we are!

Since I know Jay has a favorite, I decided book 2, RIOT BOY, would be the focus of today’s post. Mwah! [Jay sighs dreamily about how much she loves this book and wants to keep Brady and Etienne as my very own forever]

Picking pockets can lead to a lot of things—most of them bad—but Etienne’s never had a lift lead to a first date. And it only takes a look to know that Brady is pure trouble. But resisting him is a futile effort, even if Etienne had bothered to try.

But despite the many and varied pleasures they find with each other, it’s hard to overlook that Brady is also one hell of a mystery: he disappears in the night, won’t leave a phone number, and refuses to discuss his past. He needs saving, but Etienne doesn’t know from what, and Brady is in no hurry to explain.

So in the first editions of the books, there were playlists. Those aren’t in the new, Less Than Three versions—which are otherwise better!—so I could put them on my website… or, as it happens, on my blog tour. RIOT BOY happens to have one of my all time favorite writing playlists, so here it is, complete with stars for the highlights in re the story itself! You can hear them all at the YouTube Playlist:

Riot Boy: The Mixed Tape

“Atomic” by Blondie (Eat to the Beat)

“Isolation” by Joy Division (Closer)

“Looking for a Kiss” by New York Dolls (New York Dolls)

*1“Ghetto Defendant” by the Clash (Combat Rock)

*2“Orgasm Addict” by Buzzcocks (Another Music in a Different Kitchen)

“I Wanna Be Adored” by the Stone Roses (The Stone Roses)

“Start!” by the Jam (Sound Affects)

“Safe Without” by Interpol (Interpol)

*3“You Really Got Me” by the Kinks (The Singles Collection)

“I Can See Through You” by the Horrors (Skying)

“Lie to Me” by Depeche Mode (Some Great Reward)

“I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” by Ramones (Ramones)

*4“Lovesong” by the Cure (Disintegration)

“Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)” by Buzzcocks (I Don’t Mind the Buzzcocks)

“Leif Erikson” by Interpol (Turn on the Bright Lights)

“Should I Stay or Should I Go?” by the Clash (Combat Rock)

*5“Opus 12” by Dustin O’Halloran (Piano Solos Vol. 1)

*1 “Ghetto Defendant” is one of my favorite Clash tracks, which is saying quite a lot. It factors into some “first date” conversation between our heroes, Brady and Etienne. Etienne quotes poetry by Arthur Rimbaud, and Brady has heard of him because of “Ghetto Defendant.” The track starts with Allen Ginsberg’s dulcet tones as he recites some slam poetry, effectively.

Ah, poetry and love… even though none of the poems they discuss are about love >.>

*2 “Orgasm Addict” has to be a highlight, because if this book could only have one band as its soundtrack, I would choose the Buzzcocks. Though in retrospect some of the Buzzcocks may find this song embarrassing, I think most people who have been teenagers will find it very entertaining. God knows the object of affections in this story, Brady, does. And let’s be real, any song that was banned by the BBC for being raunchy, he’s gonna love.

*3 “You Really Got Me”… Brady has a tattoo of those words on his triceps. Well, here—with bonus Arthur Rimbaud reference!:

I ran the finger up to the beginning of his swirling nouveau sleeve tattoo. “What are these for?”

“For me.”

“Yeah, but what do they mean?”

“Nothing means anything in a postmodern world, Etienne.”

I smiled, thinking of Une Saison en Enfer again: Il faut être absolument moderne.

We must be absolutely modern.

Definitely a poet for the punks. Hardly a serious sentence passed their lips without leaving that irony aftertaste.

“Everything is disposable.” He threw his arm over my middle.

“Not everything.”

“Not these. That’s the idea. These are choices I made. Part of me forever.”

I kissed his sweet-smelling hair. “You never regret anything? Never want to take it back?”

“All the fucking time. But not these.”

“What about the Kinks lyrics?”

“‘You really got me.’ Same thing. And I think I’d like to be had, you know?”

*4 “Lovesong” is one of the best love songs ever—imagine that. But it’s always gotten on my nerves, too. “Whatever words I say, I will always love you”. Haha, nope, sorry buddy, words have meaning and you gotta take responsibility. No song is a get out of jail free song.

…though, if any song would be, it’d be this one.

Still, I think it’s a perfect love song for an imperfect couple, and what with all Brady’s issues, man, it suits this pair.

*5 “Opus 12” is one of the many beautiful piano pieces on O’Halloran’s albums. Sometimes when I’m writing I can’t focus if the lyrics are too tempting—either for a singalong or just listening. So I end up listening to classical or baroque or modern instrumental stuff at those times. As I was writing, I remember thinking this would be great for certain scenes of separation between Brady and Etienne. And I thought others might enjoy it for its deceptively simple-sounding beauty, too.

So please, enjoy the punk rock sass both of the playlist and of RIOT BOY! <3

Superpowered Love 3: Nobody’s Hero

Jamie Monday lives in two different worlds. With his family, he’s the golden child of awakened superpowered society. He’s meant to do great things and pass on his powers—with the appropriate girl, hand-picked by his mother. He’s already failed at the first, so he can’t bring himself to tell her the wife and children aren’t happening either.

With his friends, he’s the social director and life of the party. He’s also an out gay man with an appetite for quick and easy lays. It’s tough to have a relationship when you’re hiding off-the-charts electrical powers, but Jamie doesn’t mind.

Not until the prickly, paddy rocking, geeky-hot new guy at work shows him what he’s been missing. Kellan’s singular combination of dirty mouth and pure soul makes Jamie spark right from the beginning. But if he’s going to overcome Kelly’s defensive front and reach the gentle heart inside, Jamie will first have to come to terms with his own divided lives.
