Today I am so pleased to welcome Layla Reyne to Joyfully Jay. Layla has come to talk to us about her latest release, Noble Hops (which I reviewed here and loved). Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Favorite Nic and Cam Moments

Ending a series is always bittersweet. I’m thrilled Nic and Cam are getting their happily ever after, but I’ll miss them, dearly. They were a breath of fresh air to write—a mature couple in a relationship based on communication, respect, competency, friendship and love. And they’ve also come so far. At the start of Trouble Brewing, Nic was reluctantly being drawn into this boisterous found family that’d already claimed Cam and he ends the series with more family than he’d ever imagined. For his part, Cam came out as bi-sexual to his family and made a life for himself where he thought that might not be possible. Each man was instrumental in helping the other achieve their personal HEAs and their HEA as a couple. Here are just a few of my favorite Trouble Brewing scenes that highlight the best of the well-matched duo!

Imperial Stout – Opening Scene – I’m an action-movie fan, I’ve made no secret of this, and I adore a movie that drops me right into the thick of it. John Wick 2, The Matrix, The Dark Knight, pick a Bond movie. That’s how I wanted to start Trouble Brewing. Cam is leading a strike team into a high-stakes bust while Nic is under fire in the surveillance van. There’s action and a connection—tension and concern—from page one, and it sets the tone of the series.

Imperial Stout – Tattoo Reveal – Nic is a total secret badass. From the ex-SEAL scratching beneath the federal prosecutor’s surface, to his second job as a brewery owner, to the multitude of tattoos he hides under his suit, there were so many layers to Nic. This sexy, tense and eye-opening scene was the first big reveal to Cam (and readers) about Nic’s secrets and the fire that sizzled under his cool, calm exterior.

Craft Brew – Cam’s Breakdown – The action, the romance, the angst—it’s all there in Craft Brew, which is why it’s my favorite book I’ve written. My favorite scene from it is the one I wrote first (and was one of the first scenes I wrote in the series too)— Cam’s breakdown after a setback in the case and in his mom’s health. Normally the upbeat one, Cam is at his lowest, most vulnerable point, and Nic is there for him one hundred percent. They exchange I love yous for the first time, and for Cam, it’s the bedrock he needs as he tackles the most personal case of his career and comes out to his family. And the moment is also huge for Nic. It’s the first time he’s said those words in almost thirty years.

Noble Hops – Vaughn Interrogation – I love this scene because it shows Nic and Cam working together, professionally. They seamlessly bounce back and forth questioning the big bad, and they hold it together, despite Vaughn’s attempts to throw them off and despite the very personal and professional implications of the interrogation and the case. It’s a federal agent and prosecutor at their best, working together, as they often do, to make their case.

Noble Hops – FBI Stout Tasting – I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, we visit Wine Country a fair bit, I won’t lie… Sex over a barrel is a scene that’s been floating around in my head for a long time. I’m thrilled it finally appears on paper, with Nic and Cam as the stars. The scene is also special for the reveal of the special Stout that Nic is brewing for Cam, in Jameson barrels that the Talley family imported—a nod to the found family Nic is starting to embrace. There’s still a lot going on with the case, but it’s a moment for Nic and Cam to celebrate their love and how far they’ve come, and for the reader, it’s a lovely happy high right before the shit hits the fan… as it’s wont to do in my series 😉

Blurb

Everything Dominic Price has worked hard to uphold is about to come crashing down on everything he holds dear.

So much for the quiet life. Just as assistant US attorney and brewery owner Dominic Price is settling into a comfy new chapter with his partner, FBI agent Cameron Byrne, the sudden death of Nic’s father puts their happily-ever-after in jeopardy. Nic immediately suspects foul play, his prime suspect a notorious gangster his father was indebted to—only now the loan shark is out for blood.

Cam has been longing for Nic to finally let him in on this very personal case. But when Nic’s belief that he’s the sole Price heir is upended, the line between personal and professional starts to blur, leaving Cam unsure of where he stands.

Nic is depending on Cam’s kidnap and rescue expertise to save his recently discovered family member before it’s too late. But with a dangerous threat closing in, the ghosts from Nic’s past cast long shadows. Any relationship could crack under the pressure, but for Nic, finding his family might mean losing the love of his life.
