Favourite Queer Romantic Suspense Novels

Next to paranormal, romantic suspense has to be my favourite subgenre of romance. There’s something about two main characters facing danger together, and ultimately overcoming it, that just works for me. Particularly because a lot of these novels feature law enforcement characters, and that’s completely my catnip.

So without further ado, here are some of my favourite queer romantic suspense novels. I hope you’ll find something you haven’t read yet and want to try!

The Marshals series by Mary Calmes
First book: All Kinds of Tied Down

What it’s about: This series follows U.S. Deputy Marshal Miro Jones and his partner, Ian Doyle. When we first meet Miro, he’s lusting after his (supposedly) straight partner, who also happens to be his best friend. Over the course of four books, Miro and Ian develop a solid relationship, despite the danger they both face on a regular basis. (Especially Miro; he’s as much a trouble magnet as another of Mary Calmes’s characters, Jory Harcourt.)

Why you should read it: Miro is my favourite Mary Calmes character. He has a ton of flaws and insecurities, but is a very strong and capable man nonetheless—which makes his romantic and professional relationship with Ian work on so many levels. These two characters are totally meant for each other, which comes across perfectly on page, even when they’re struggling to make their relationship work.

The Diversion series by Eden Winters
First book: Diversion

What it’s about: Lucky Lucklighter has his nickname for a reason. After operating on the wrong side of the law for most of his life and ending up in jail, he’s offered the chance to serve out his sentence by putting his not-so-lawful skills to work for a drug agency. His time’s almost up, so he’s assigned to train his replacement, Bo Schollenberger, who is Lucky’s opposite in pretty much every way. But you know what they say about opposites and attraction.

Why you should read it: I devoured the books that were available in this series (five at the time) while at RWA in NYC in 2015. Two more have been added since, and the way Lucky and Bo’s relationship has developed over the course of all the books is just wonderful. I especially loved that both characters—who seemed pretty what-you-see-is-what-you-get when you first meet them—turned out to be a lot deeper than I was expecting. Particularly Bo. You’ll have to read the series to see what I mean!

The Bad Behavior series by L.A. Witt and Cari Z.
First book: Risky Behavior

What it’s about: Darren Corliss is a brand-new detective, sparkly and shiny, who’s assigned to a older, tarnished partner. Andreas Ruffner is on a personal mission, that much is clear, but Darren isn’t sure how far Andreas is willing to go to get what he wants—or exactly what it is that he wants, either.

Why you should read it: There is so much I loved about this series: how Darren and Andreas’s relationship progressed from such a rocky, distrustful start; how Andreas’s bisexuality was portrayed; how unafraid the authors were of making Andreas very flawed; how the authors tackled a sensitive and difficult situation with one of the characters; and so much more.

The Life Lessons series by Kaje Harper
First book: Life Lessons

What it’s about: Tony Hart’s life is upended when there’s a murder at the school where he works, and Detective Jared “Mac” Maclean enters his life. Mac is a widowed father and deeply in the closet, but he and Tony are immediately drawn together.

Why you should read it: This is one of the first mystery/romantic suspense/police procedurals I read when I began to read m/m, and it remains one of my favourite series of all time. There’s so much going on in it—there’s the romantic suspense side of things with the mystery, police procedural, and danger aspect for both Mac and Tony, and then there’s the very human side of their relationship as it progresses over the four books. Tony and Mac have to battle discrimination, Mac’s unwillingness to come out of the closet, what it means for their relationship, blending their families, and the consequences of Mac being a police officer. It’s such a well-rounded and satisfying series.

Blurb

Dying isn’t what it used to be.

Wes Cooper was dead. Then he wasn’t—though he’s not exactly alive, either. As an immortal not-ghost, he can transition between this world and the otherplane, which makes him the perfect thief for hire. For seventy years he’s made a “living” returning items to their rightful owners, seeing his fair share of the bizarre in the process. But he’s never witnessed murder. Until now.

His latest mission brings him more than he bargained for: a very-dead actor who is definitely going to stay that way. It’s just Wes’s luck that his ex-boyfriend, Detective Hudson Rojas, is assigned to the case. Hudson broke Wes’s heart years ago—and could again, given he’s rocking a hot silver-fox look that shouldn’t be legal.

As they work together to track down the murderer before anyone else gets hurt, it becomes clear Wes and Hudson have unfinished business. And when a secret Hudson’s been keeping threatens more than just their happiness, it might mean the end of their not-life together—permanently.

Bio

Jenn Burke has loved out-of-this-world romance since she first read about heroes and heroines kicking butt and falling in love as a preteen. Now that she’s an author, she couldn’t be happier to bring adventure, romance, and sexy times to her readers.

Jenn is the author of a number of paranormal and science fiction romance titles, including the critically acclaimed Chaos Station science fiction romance series (authored with Kelly Jensen) from Carina Press.

She’s been called a pocket-sized and puntastic Canadian on social media, and she’ll happily own that label. Jenn lives just outside of Ottawa, Ontario, with her husband and two kids, plus two dogs named after video game characters…because her geekiness knows no bounds.
