When I first read Salt Magic, Skin Magic, the book became one of my favorites of the year. Lee Welch excels at crafting a fabulous paranormal world filled with magic, along side a wonderful historical, and a delicious romance. There is a nice sense of mystery to the book as John and Thornby work to figure out what magic is keeping Thornby trapped on the family estate, as well as what is driving his father to trap him there. There are so many elements working together here and Welch does such an excellent job building them all into a really captivating and delightful story. If you want to know more about my thoughts on the book or the basics of the story, be sure to check out my review here.
When I got the chance to listen to this one in audio with one of my favorite narrators, Joel Leslie, I was eager to pick it up. I have to say, as much as I loved the original story, Leslie really adds another layer that brings it to life in fabulous ways here. The character voices are spot on, the pacing is perfect, and he gets the banter and bits of humor between the characters just right. I could feel all the emotions I had when reading portrayed through his narration and the whole thing was just delightful.
Listening to this story, I was totally drawn in and just captivated completely. I found myself getting so engrossed, I couldn’t put it down, which says a lot considering I had already read the book and knew what was going to happen. But Leslie’s performance is so spot on that I just got lost in listening to it.
So this book is wonderful and one that I can enthusiastically recommend in either written or audio format.
I certainly enjoyed reading this last year; it’s good to hear that the audio version is excellent. I’m wondering now what will come next from this author.
I haven’t heard about anything new since the short story I reviewed from an anthology. But I’d eagerly pick up anything that comes out!
