Today I am so pleased to welcome Davidson King to Joyfully Jay. Davidson has come to talk to us about her latest release, Snow Storm. She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

What’s In A Name

I was sitting in front of my laptop wondering what cool guest post I could write for Joyfully Jay. I love being able to pop in here and talk, and of course everyone is so nice. I wanted to do something different. So, I started thinking about things readers have asked me and names always come up.

One I get ALL the time is, “How did you come up with that name?” Funny thing is, I have no idea. I don’t always know a name until I’m mid-sentence. Snow was easy. He was one I knew from the very beginning. Christopher I knew later after brainstorming a bit. I wanted to be careful not to have a bunch of obscure names that wouldn’t be believable. Snow’s backstory explains his name and I didn’t really want to explain anyone else’s.

Throughout the series names were born. Some stranger than others but most are real names. Quill is a shortening of his real name and Black is a piece of his full name. Mace is the same thing. Now, we meet Ginger in From These Ashes and see him again in Snow Storm. That is NOT his name and that was how it worked for me. But we get to his story in the next book.

I had a reader ask me recently an interesting question and it was because of this question that I realized SOMETIMES picking names up as I go isn’t always wise. She asked, “I noticed there was a Mrs. Markle, a bodyguard named Mark, and then the Marks family in this series, do you love that name or was it coincidence?” It was a coincidence, but it was something I never realized and I am glad to know that, like my Italian family of a ton of Francis’, Maria’s, Anthony’s, and Vinny’s, my books sometimes have repetition in the names. It happens.

I don’t scroll baby books or read the cast at the end of movies. Titles for books and names of characters just pop in my head and become a part of my fictional worlds.

I wish it was something far more glamorous for the discovery of a name, but alas, it’s no different than flipping a coin to see what side it lands on.

However, I doubt, in my whole life, I will ever hear a name I’ve put in my books that I will not always smile at hearing. Christopher has a new meaning for me. As does Bill, Teddy, Maggie, Frank, and so on.

Blurb

The city of Haven Hart rests under the heel of Christopher Manos. He reigns over the most dangerous and deadliest citizens as the most powerful crime boss the city has seen in generations. Yet, for the last five years, the harshest edges of his nature have been tempered by the loving devotion of his husband, Snow, and the nephew Christopher adores like a son. His life is a balance of darkness and light until a birthday trip for his nephew, Simon, is interrupted by a hail of bullets and explosions, threatening to destroy it all.

Snow has found a home, a family, and the love of one of Haven Hart’s most powerful men. When Christopher and Simon are kidnapped, Snow risks everything to find his family. Utilizing specialized skills he learned on the streets and the finer points of running a city from his crime boss husband, Snow takes on roles he never dreamed he would–protector, leader, and avenger. No one threatens his family and lives. Experienced enough to know he can’t do this alone, Snow calls in every favor he is owed, risking his life promising favors in return, all to save his family and the man he loves.

The sins of the Manos crime family are escaping the dark recesses of the past and threatening the bright future of everything Snow and Christopher have built. Yet, even with the help of some unlikely and uniquely dangerous people, Snow finds himself wondering if their efforts will be enough to save the two most important people in his life. Will the loving family Snow has finally found be taken from him forever?
