Today I am so pleased to welcome K. Evan Coles to Joyfully Jay. K. has come to talk to us about her latest release, Third Time’s the Charm. She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

25 Random Rapid-Fire Questions with Characters from “Third Time’s the Charm”

Even before I started writing “Third Time’s the Charm,” I was half in love with Luke Ryan. He’d sprung up out of nowhere and started percolating in my head, just waiting for his chance at a story. Once Luke had my attention, I found his love interest, Finn Thomason, proved even easier to fall for.

My friend Shelli was a beta reader for “Third Time’s the Charm” and she suggested I throw some rapid-fire questions at them, which proved to be a lot of fun. Thanks for the suggestion, Shelli!

Name?

Luke: I’m Luke Ryan.

Finn: And I’m Finn Thomason.

Last Text?

Luke: ‘What did I say about swearing?’

Finn: *laughs* Mine was ‘Dude, I’m all about the gore right now’.

What’s your favorite thing in your closet right now?

Finn: I just bought some new checkerboard Vans.

Luke: Are you going to wear them on duty at the hospital?

Finn: I’d like to, but they might get messed up. So no.

What’s the best piece advice you’ve received?

Luke: Quit bitching about what you’d rather be doing and focus on how to get there instead.

Finn: Don’t forget to take of yourself, too.

Do you have any pets?

Finn: I have a cat named Daisy.

Luke: A.k.a., Princess Poops-a-lot.

What’s your favorite ice cream?

Luke: Black raspberry or peppermint stick.

Finn: Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.

Can you describe yourself as a teenager in 3 words?

Finn: Sulky, stressed, and outspoken.

Luke: About school?

Finn: About everything. I was kind of a moody pain in the ass when I was a teenager.

Luke: Huh, I can’t picture it. I probably was too, though, and I know I had a lot of surplus energy. I started running when I was fourteen and that helped me focus.

What’s in your messenger/duffel bag right now?

Luke: Hand sanitizer, keys, tissues, laptop, Chapstick, mints, snacks.

Finn: A change of clothes, keys, bottled water, a protein bar, and Funko figures of Captain America and Iron Man.

Luke: How did they get in there?

Finn: I have no idea or how long they’ve been in there.

How do you like your coffee?

Luke: In my mouth.

Finn: *cracking up* You goof. He likes an Americano, whole milk, no sugar.

Luke: Finn likes cold brew, the stronger the better, but he’ll drink any fresh coffee, just like I will.

Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?

Finn: Yes.

Luke: Finn hasn’t met a chocolate yet that he hasn’t liked.

Have you ever worn socks with sandals before?

Finn: I feel very attacked right now.

Luke: *raises an eyebrow* That’s a yes, my dude.

If you could change careers, what would you be doing?

Finn: Ummm. Hm. Honestly, I’ve never thought about doing anything else. I like to cook though, so doing something in the culinary arts would be cool.

Luke: I’ve always been interested in architecture. I think building actual physical structures would be amazing.

What’s on your listening playlist right now?

Finn: Willy Moon, Groove Armada, Beastie Boys, Vitalic, Daft Punk, Propellerheads, and a few more. I think this is a dancing kind of playlist.

Luke: N.E.R.D, The Beta Band, The Crystal Method, UNKLE, Beastie Boys, Jake Bugg, Them Crooked Vultures, Run D.M.C., Foo Fighters. A few others.

If you could have any three people (dead or alive) over for dinner, who would they be?

Finn: Anthony Bourdain, Dave Grohl, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Luke: My parents. And David Bowie. I always thought he was super cool.

If your apartment was on fire, what two things would you run back in to get?

Luke: My niece, Ella, and my hard drives.

Finn: My cat.

A book you read that positively shaped you?

Finn: Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby changed the way I looked at the world.

Luke: I feel the same way about The Swimming Pool Libraries by Alan Hollinghurst.

Who would play you in the movie of your life?

Luke: Scarlett Johansson.

Finn: I’m dying.

iPhone or Android?

Both: Android.

If you had a spirit animal, what would it be?

Finn: A golden eagle.

Luke: Ooh, yeah, I see that.

Finn: Pretty sure you’d be big dog, like a German Shepard.

Luke: That might explain my urge to lick your face.

What’s your favorite TV show?

Luke: Star Trek – any universe and series – and Mindhunter. I like EastSiders, too. Oh, and The Rookie! Nathan Fillion is funny.

Finn: My schedule makes it hard to keep up with TV shows, so I like stuff I can watch on demand. Luke got me hooked on Mindhunter and Stranger Things. And I like those Chicago shows on network TV with all the hot doctors and firefighters.

Any tattoos?

Finn: No.

Luke: Yeah, same. I’ve been thinking about an idea for one, though. Still haven’t made up my mind where or what kind of design, but I think it’s going to happen.

Best gift you’ve ever received?

Finn: My cat. She was my ex boyfriend’s, but I was Daisy’s favorite from the moment we met. He gave her to me after we broke up.

Luke: My first PC. Which I took apart and put back together several times.

Favorite insult to throw in the heat of the moment?

Luke: Motherfucker.

Finn: Asshat.

If Chris Evans came over to you right now, what would you say to him?

Finn: Oh, Zaddy.

Luke: Finn, no.

Finn: Finn, YES.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Luke: To make people see themselves the way others see them.

Finn: I like that. We need more of that in the world.

Blurb

Sometimes you have to start over to get love right.

Luke Ryan’s life is too chaotic for romance, what with running his business and being the legal guardian to his ten-year-old niece, but he’s hopeful he’ll find the right man.

Trauma surgeon Finn Thomason recently relocated from Chicago to Boston, where his focus on medicine leaves him little space for a personal life. Making a commitment to find a better work-life balance, Finn hopes he’ll also find a relationship.

Caught in an evening rainstorm, Luke shelters under a sidewalk awning…and encounters a handsome stranger. The two strike up a conversation and Finn offers to walk Luke under his oversized umbrella. Charmed, Luke accepts and asks Finn out for coffee in thanks.

Luke and Finn quickly grow close, but, as the summer draws to an end, Luke struggles to keep his connection with Finn while Finn tries to come to terms with caring for a man whose attention is pulled in many directions. Both men are scrambling to get it right, but only time will tell if they’ll learn there is more than enough room in their hearts to go around.

Bio

K. Evan Coles is a mother and tech pirate by day and a writer by night. She is a dreamer who, with a little hard work and a lot of good coffee, coaxes words out of her head and onto paper.

K. lives in the northeast United States, where she complains bitterly about the winters, but truly loves the region and its diverse, tenacious and deceptively compassionate people. You’ll usually find K. nerding out over books, movies and television with friends and family. She’s especially proud to be raising her son as part of a new generation of unabashed geeks.

K.’s books explore LGBTQ+ romance in contemporary settings.
