Today I am so pleased to welcome Layla Reyne to Joyfully Jay. Layla has come to talk to us about her latest release, Prince of Killers (which I reviewed here and totally loved). She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving Layla a big welcome!

San Francisco: The Character

Prince of Killers, out now, is book one of my new romantic suspense series, Fog City. The series takes its name from a common moniker for San Francisco, where, for a good nine months of the year, the fog banks roll in daily. That old Mark Twain quote about the coldest summer he ever spent was in San Francisco is no joke. Moving here from North Carolina, my first summer working in Fog City was a rude awakening. But thirteen years later, there’s something about the fog and it’s all encompassing nature that I’ve grown to love. Watching the fog roll in during the afternoons – or sitting in the ballpark as it creeps in from behind, over the stands, and all around — is pretty cool.

Fog isn’t the only San Francisco treat that’s featured in Prince of Killers. Whereas my prior series were mostly centered around the UN Plaza area where the Whiskey Verse crew worked, I got to visit some new neighborhoods with Fog City. The hills of Pacific Heights, the renovated-for-residential warehouses in South Beach, and the rapidly expanding Dogpatch / Central Waterfront neighborhood. Dante’s reaction to the incredible growth there is a common one. In the years I’ve been here, I’ve seen it go from ballpark parking lots and derelict shipping piers to a thriving sports, science, education and tech area. Yeah, there’s plenty of traffic to go with it, but the energy of the neighborhood is amazing.

Finally, it wouldn’t be one of my books, even the romantic suspense ones, without some food thrown in there. Not only are Hawes and Dante both more than capable in the kitchen (cooking and otherwise), one of my favorite San Francisco restaurants is featured in the opening scene, as are the mooncakes that I became addicted to while working in the Financial District, which borders Chinatown. You’ll see even more fun San Francisco dining spots in book two!

The fog, and San Francisco, form a great backdrop for this series about moral ambiguity and shifting alliances, as the characters struggle through the gray to find their way home—to a place and to their true selves. As Hawes and Dante will come to learn, sometimes you just have to embrace it, get lost, and appreciate where you come out on the other side.

Blurb

No indiscriminate killing. No collateral damage. No unvetted targets

These are the rules Hawes Madigan lives by. Rules that make being Fog City’s Prince of Killers bearable. Soon, he’ll be king—of an organization of assassins—and the crown has never felt heavier. Until the mysterious Dante Perry swaggers into his life.

Dante looks like a rock god and carries himself like one too, all loose-limbed and casually confident. He also carries a concealed weapon, a private investigator’s license, and a message for the prince. Someone inside Hawes’s organization is out to kill the future king.

In the chaos that follows the timely warning, Hawes comes to depend on Dante. On his skills as an investigator, on the steadiness he offers, and on their moments alone when Hawes lets Dante take control. As alliances are tested and traitors exposed, Hawes needs Dante at his back and in his bed. But if the PI ever learns Hawes’s darkest secret, Hawes is sure to get a knife to the heart—and a bullet to the brain—instead.

There’s no shortage of twists and turns in this new romantic suspense trilogy from Layla Reyne. Prince of Killers is book one of three. Fair warning: buckle up, cliffhangers ahead!
