Today I am so pleased to welcome Morgan Brice to Joyfully Jay. Morgan has come as part of the Coastal Magic Blog Tour to talk to us about her release, Flame and Ash. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!
Keeping the Zing
Magazine covers love to highlight articles about how to keep the spark in a relationship after the newness wears off. That spark, zest, zing—whatever you want to call it—is a feeling that combines comfort and trust with excitement and newness.
That same challenge lies behind book series, especially those that focus on the ongoing adventures of the same main characters. It’s actually twice the zing—keeping the series’ plots fresh and also finding ways to deepen and expand the characters’ relationship.
I love to read series and write them. As Morgan Brice, I currently have three series (Witchbane, Badlands and Treasure Trail) with more to come. And as Gail Z. Martin, I have a bunch more. Part of the fun, for me, is getting past the initial phases where you figure out who people are and what the landscape looks like (worldbuilding) and really get to see how the characters’ minds work, what they’ll do when their backs are to the wall, and what makes them tick.
Flame and Ash is my newest Morgan Brice book (Witchbane #4), and Inheritance (Deadly Curiosities #4) will be coming out soon under my Gail Z. Martin name. The exciting thing for me as an author is that every time I go back to do a new adventure, I learn something more about the characters—their fears, insecurities, strengths, interests, and quirks. That’s because each new plot puts the characters to the test in new and different ways. At the same time, they grow as people and their relationships—romantic or friendship—change and evolve.
One of the key elements that shifts in an ongoing series is trust. In a first book, the excitement is about getting to know each other. But after the newness wears off, trust becomes essential—and we all come to every type of relationship with baggage. When it comes to friendships or work relationships or family bonds or romance, every adult has been burned a few times. Whether we mean to or not, we carry those scars with us and try to protect ourselves, but sometimes the past can also keep us from taking good risks and starting over. In an ongoing series, there is space to explore that trust on many levels and also peel away the insecurities and baggage to get to know the characters better.
In Flame and Ash, Seth and Evan are still figuring out their relationship six months after they got together under high pressure conditions. They are learning to trust and rely on each other, but the more they open up to one another, the more past hurts and disappointments seem to surface to make them question themselves, their feelings, and their future. Throw in a dark witch who’s trying to kill them, and the sparks really fly!

Book Four in the Witchbane series.
One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner’s brother, Jesse
Seth rescued Evan Malone from one of the witches, and they’ve fallen in love despite the danger and chaos, going on the road to complete the quest and bring an end to the ritual murders. Their relationship is new, their emotions are raw, and the danger is real. It’s a challenge to find their way as a couple while they’re on the road together in the close quarters of Seth’s RV, training in magic and combat skills to fight off a supernatural killer.
In pursuit of the next witch-disciple, Seth and Evan team up with older hunters Milo and Toby as their quest to stop a century-long killing spree takes them to a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They’re ahead of the sacrifice cycle, with plans to stop the murders and kill the dark witch. Only this time, the hunters become the hunted when the witch knows they’re coming to get him, and has deadly plans of his own. When their lives are on the line, will love be enough?
Morgan Brice is the romance pen name of bestselling author Gail Z. Martin. Morgan writes urban fantasy male/male paranormal romance, with plenty of action, adventure and supernatural thrills to go with the happily ever after. Gail writes epic fantasy and urban fantasy, and together with co-author hubby Larry N. Martin, steampunk and comedic horror, all of which have less romance, more explosions. Characters from her Gail books make frequent appearances in secondary roles in her Morgan books, and vice versa.
