More Than a Cover

Claiming Marcus and the entire Lords of Discord series didn’t come in the normal way for me. Usually coming up with ideas for new books and series is a lot of staring off into space, allowing my imagination to roam unhindered down strange and twisting paths until it meets someone interesting.

For the four brothers, it actually started with a piece of art. I was digging around for images for one reason or another. I don’t remember now if I was brainstorming for a new cover image or just looking for a promotional image, but I stumbled across the picture of a man sitting at a piano in the rising surf as the sun rose.

I couldn’t look away. The colors were so crisp. The image was so haunting. The man seemed so alone, tragic. Trapped.

And in an instant, I knew he had a story to tell. A story that I had to tell.

I dug through the rest of the artist’s work, and found an entire series featuring musical instruments. Four in particular sang to me (if you’ll forgive the pun).

Four brothers trained in music, but they all looked so haunted and powerful. Hypnotic.

It just so happened that I stumbled across the images as I was getting ready to jump back into writing paranormal books. My very first series was about a vampire and a vampire hunter. My next one was a warlock, elf, and troll. My roots are in the strange and magical.

And these four brothers embraced all that was strange and magical for me.

Their story quickly unfolded in my brain. Four brothers raised by a loving and devoted single mother in Victorian England. But tragedy strikes just as she finally finds the love of her life. She’s dying and the man she loves just happens to be a vampire. He turns her to save her, but something goes horribly wrong. Her mind breaks. She drifts between her normal sweet self and horrible bouts of violence. Only the gentle music played by her sons can pull her back to sanity.

Desperate to protect their mother, the four brothers make the ultimate sacrifice. They become vampires to keep her safe for the rest of her life and to protect the world from her.

But after nearly two centuries, the vampire world will no longer tolerate an insane vampire.

I hope that you enjoy this new world and are excited to meet all of the Varik Clan. Marcus, Rafe, Beltran, and Winter are an interesting family, and their adventures are going to take some interesting twists and turns.

Bio

It started with a battered notebook. Jocelynn Drake wrote her first story when she was 12 years old. It was a retelling of Robin Hood that now included a kick-ass female who could keep up with all the boys and be more than just a sad little love interest. From there, she explored space, talked to dragons, and fell in love again and again and again.

This former Kentucky girl has moved up, down, and across the U.S. with her patient husband. They’ve settled near the Rockies…for now. She spends the majority of her time lost in the strong embrace of a good book.
