Today I am so pleased to welcome Kate Hawthorne to Joyfully Jay. Kate has come to talk to us about her latest release, Unfettered (which I reviewed here and loved). She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Writing Unfettered was a bit like coming home.

If you’ve read my other books, you’ll know I spent most of 2018 writing kinky stories about kinky things. 2019 was a bit more angsty, and I’ve been itching to twist some kink bank into my plots. Honestly, I’ve been sitting on this book for a while, though. I finished it over the summer and I was waiting for the right time to release it, and it quickly started to feel like the right time would be never. I think I’m too attached to the main characters, Heath and Beau.

I’ve always woven real life experiences into my stories, and there’s a Dear Reader letter at the back of Unfettered that shares a bit about why this story is so deeply personal to me. I don’t want to mention it here because I don’t want to give anything away, but there are some things I can tell you about the path these characters travel together.

Heath is an abuse survivor, and allowing himself to have that label was something he struggled with for a long time, on and off the page. His ability to trust has been damaged, and he’s not able to really enjoy the kinds of things he used to. And then he meets Beau. Beau is young and confident, and he’s not afraid of Heath’s past, and most importantly, he’s willing to put in the work to prove to Heath he’s trustworthy and deserving of respect.

That’s one of the things I love the most about writing power exchange…diving into the respect and trust characters need to have with each other in order for their dynamic to work. For as much as Beau wants Heath’s respect, Beau also pushes Heath to find himself deserving of it. Their relationship is a very delicate, and sometimes tentative push and pull, and I hope I was able to write it in a believable way. Heath isn’t the only one who gets something he needs from Beau. Beau also finds a lot of comfort from Heath, too.

That all sounds terribly heavy, I know. But aside from everything I talked about above, there’s also a troublesome cat named Hemingway, a very steamy scene with nipple clamps, a terribly romantic Christmas stroll, and FIVE brothers who you’ll get a lot more familiar with in 2020.

Blurb

How can Heath find happiness again when he’s terrified of the things he loves?

After a reckless scene gone wrong, Heath is floating alone though life, unable to trust anyone enough give up control. Everything changes when he accepts a dinner invitation from a handsome younger man.

Beau is a twenty-four year old student with a strong personality who he knows exactly what he wants in life. And right now, he wants Heath. It doesn’t matter that Heath has a traumatic past, and it definitely doesn’t matter when they find out Heath is one of his professors.

The reemergence of someone Heath used to know sends their relationship into a tailspin, and leaves Beau questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. To save his relationship with Heath, he has to turn to the support system he’s never had before…his long lost brothers.

Heath has finally rediscovered the liberation in restraint, but now Beau needs to find the freedom promised from being truly unfettered.
