Today I am so pleased to welcome Edie Montreux to Joyfully Jay. Edie has come to talk to us about her latest release, The King’s Physician. She has also brought along a great tour wide giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Thanks so much for giving me a bit of space on your blog to gush over my current release, The King’s Physician. Today, I’m going to answer a few author interview questions for those new to Edie Montreux (you know – all of you. Except you, if you’re here because I sent you this link.)

Q: What was your first published work? Tell me a little about it.

A: My first published work was a short story in the YaoiCon anthology, “Spoils of War.” It’s about a cadre of Russian soldiers who stumble into a German beerhall at the end of World War II. Instead of beer, they find an ancient Roman vampire. The payment for the piece was a free copy of the anthology, but the true reward was meeting my writing partner, the anthology’s editor.

Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

A: Two words: Spider. Sex. I wrote a short story for a submission call that never materialized. I’ve since provided it for free on BookFunnel, if you want to sign up for my newsletter and you’re into spider/half-giant erotica: https://dl.bookfunnel.com/ihqy73xg2h. It’s definitely the weirdest thing I’ve ever researched/written, but it’s M/M, fantasy, and even a bit romantic.

Q: Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How does that affect your writing?

A: I’m a part-time writer. My full-time job as a web designer can be draining, but I use my writing and editing skills in my day job. Keeping my skills sharp for when I do have time to write is half the battle. I usually write on the weekends, but my job’s been encroaching on my evenings and weekends, which has been rough. I hope to have more time to write in 2020 than I did in 2019.

Q: Are you a plotter or a pantster?

A: I used to be a pantser. My first attempt at writing a novel was 200,000 words of angsty young adult fiction. If you’ve ever read YA, you know that’s almost three times too long. Editing that novel to a workable draft was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. My next goal for that first novel is to transform it into an 80,000 word YA Romance, which will be a complete rewrite. Now, I plot everything using a combination of Romancing the Beats and The Snowflake Method. As a part-time writer, I don’t have time to wander the wilderness, hoping to find the road to Mordor by accident.

Q: What are you working on now, and when can we expect it?

A: After The King’s Physician, my next release will be a contemporary novel, Pika Perfect, coming mid-2020 from MLR Press. I’ve included the blurb on my website (https://www.ediemontreux.com/coming-soon).  I also have a short story in a Working Vampires anthology coming in April. Devlin was the King’s Physician until a blood mage siphoned Devlin’s magic and used it to wipe the kingdom’s memories. Sir Eldrich, his replacement, has protection against Filvane’s spells, but he only knows the whispered rumors: Devlin, the former King’s Physician, stole King Korgon’s crown on his coronation day.

Once Eldrich is appointed King’s Physician, Devlin notices a decline in King Korgon’s health and wonders if Eldrich is to blame. When Eldrich nearly bleeds to death on Devlin’s doorstep from grievous sword wounds, they’re thrown together in a race to keep King Korgon alive. They question the other’s allegiance to their king, but it will take their combined efforts and trust to stop Filvane from destroying Korgon and the entire realm of the living. In the end, these two King’s physicians may have more in common than their titles. They may even fall in love.
