Today I am so pleased to welcome Isobel Starling to Joyfully Jay. Isobel has come to talk to us about her Shatterproof Bond series. She has also brought along a great tour wide giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome

Isobel has written some questions and answers to share with us!

What advice would you give a new writer, someone just starting out?

IS: I would advise a new writer to not only focus on their writing but to learn some skills that in this day are vital to being a writer. Skills like simple book formatting and basic Photoshop can save authors a lot of money. There are lots of businesses that feed of authors who are uninitiated in what is needed to publish and publishing ‘can’ be expensive… but it doesn’t have to be. I was living on less than $100 per week when I first self-published in 2015. Now I have a decent income.

It takes time to learn how to brand yourself as an author but you will need to do it whether you are indie or with a traditional publisher. Publishers do not market books as they did in the old days so authors need to learn basic marketing- making their own books graphics, and covers. They need to be aware that to succeed they will need to do the lions share of pushing their book and building their author platform.

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be? How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

IS: Writing is my full-time career and has been for the past five years. In that time I’ve released 42 books (in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish) and have 14 audiobooks. I don’t necessarily have a favorite book of my own. As I work on a book or series I am totally in love with the characters. Letting go is hard. So far out of my three series I’ve completed one, and finishing that character’s story was very emotional.  I’m kind of dreading working on book 6 in Shatterproof Bond, titled “The Rebel Candidate”. I know the ending already, but getting there is going to be a very emotional struggle for me and a rollercoaster for the reader!

Have any of your books been made into audiobooks? If so, what are the challenges in producing an audiobook?

IS: I have 14 audiobooks, one of which is the winner of the Independent Audiobook Award for Romance in 2018. “As You Wish” beat M/F Romances to be the first MM audiobook to win a mainstream award. In turn, this convinced the award organizers that there was an audience for LGBT audiobooks (which they did not believe there was before my win). The next year an LGBTQI category had been added to the awards.

I have a great relationship with my narrator Gary Furlong. He is so talented that he can do any of the accents I add to my books. It makes a huge difference to know he not only narrates but enjoys my work too, which comes across in his performances. We have a system worked out and the process is very smooth. The only issues we have ever had have been about the pronunciation of names, which can be a bit of a pain but is easy to fix.

The one thing that I am a stickler on is that I proof my own audiobooks. I don’t understand how authors can release audio without listening to their books. I have an exceptionally high standard about my audiobooks which Gary shares. We will not let an audiobook out unless it is of the highest standard.

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers?

IS: I am currently working on the second book in my historical “Resurrectionist” series. Book #1 “The Shooting Season” was published in December 2019 in ebook, paperback, and audiobook. It was a roaring success and readers immediately wanted more. I am 25k into writing “The Gentleman’s Thief” which I hope to be ready for March 2020.

After that, I will be editing book 2 in my Fantasy series “The Quiet Work”. This book “Dark Harvest” is another that is highly anticipated by my readers. I hope to have it ready by the time I’m signing at the RARE book signing event in Edinburgh in June 2020.

Book 1: As You Wish

WINNER OF THE 2018 AUDIOBOOK REVIEWER AWARD FOR ROMANCE

1 wedding, 2 best men, one hell of a love story!

Declan Ramsay was set to be the best man at his brother’s wedding in Scotland, sharing best man duties with the bride’s gay kid brother Sam.  Sam was abroad finishing his studies so the best men communicated by email for more than a year and wouldn’t meet for the first time until a few days before the wedding.

But on meeting Sam Aiken, Declan is surprised to see he isn’t a kid at all, but a striking, athletic blond man with gorgeous green eyes and a wicked sense of humor.  Declan is alarmed by the ferocious attraction he feels for Sam. And as the attraction is reciprocated, the events at Dunloch Castle change everything Declan has ever believed about himself.

But is Sam Aiken all he appears to be?

Also available in paperback and as an award-winning audiobook, narrated by Gary Furlong.
