Today I am so pleased to welcome Lily Morton to Joyfully Jay. Lily has come to talk to us about her latest release, Charlie Sunshine (which I reviewed here and loved). She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

I was thrilled when I decided to make the hero of my latest book into a librarian because at last, I had a job that I didn’t need to research. I worked in libraries for twenty years – ten in public libraries and ten as a school librarian.

I’ve had many jobs in my time, but that was the one I loved the most. There is nowhere like a library for me – the books, the smell, the bustle. No day is ever the same in a library either. In one day alone, I did children’s storytime dressed as Harry Potter, aired out books that a cat had peed on, administered first aid to a customer, and tried to help a customer who only wanted to read books that had purple covers and were exactly two hundred pages long.

Charlie’s library may have been created in my head, but it’s made out of many of the libraries at which I’ve worked. Once I started to write, I was amazed at how many funny incidents I remembered from my time. There really was a little old man who used to write his phone number in the back of the romance books, and anyone who has ever run a book club will recognise some of the characters who attend Charlie’s.

At one point, Charlie makes a passionate speech to a dinner party of very disinterested people about why we still desperately need public libraries. That speech is on the lips of every librarian, and I was ecstatic that I finally got to make it to a captive audience.

Library staff are wonderful. I’ve never worked with a better set of people. They’re passionately dedicated to their jobs, enormously patient, a fount of great and varied knowledge, and very funny. As Misha puts it in the book:

“I’m absolutely positive that librarians shouldn’t be this snarky.”

Blurb

Charlie sunshineSometimes love is a lot closer to home than you think.

Charlie Burroughs can’t keep a man. All he wants is a good relationship like the ones he sees his friends having, but none of the men he picks ever work out. Despite him trying to be the perfect boyfriend, the men are either threatened by his looks or his epilepsy or a combination of the two. It’s lucky that he has his best friend Misha to turn to. The two of them are closer than peas in a pod and fiercely loyal to each other. He can’t imagine his life without Misha in it.

Misha Lebedinsky is the complete opposite of his best friend. Being the support system for his mum and twin sisters leaves Misha with neither the time nor the inclination for a relationship. Quick and frequent hook-ups are his favourite means of communication and any other pesky emotional needs he has are met by Charlie, who he’s devoted to. He lives a life of happy compartmentalization with no intention of ever changing.

All of this changes when the two best friends move in together.

Being in close proximity means that they suddenly start to see each other in a very different light. But Charlie struggles when his drive to be the perfect partner clashes with the fact that he’s in love with a man who knows every little thing about him. And even if he can get past that, can a relationship ever work with a man who’d need a dictionary to tell him what love means?

From bestselling author Lily Morton comes a love story about a sunny librarian who has relationship written all over him and a banker who doesn’t even have it in his blurb. This is the second book in the Close Proximity series, but it can be read as a standalone.
