Today I am so pleased to welcome AG Meiers to Joyfully Jay. AG has come to talk to us about her latest release, Promise Me. She has also brought along a fabulous giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

AG has written some questions and answers to share today!

How did you come up with the title?

Maybe the title sounds overly romantic, but it’s actually not meant that way at all.

A promise is a big deal. It’s a declaration of sorts. A commitment. Breaking a promise is failure. But not every promise can be kept. Rafe Stanton, one of the MCs in the story, has learned that many times over…the hard way.

But yet again, Rafe makes a promise. This time to his younger cousin the night Noah dies tragically in a car accident. Rafe takes on his powerful family to make sure his cousin’s will is executed to the letter and Noah’s secret husband Logan inherits the money. It becomes Rafe’s chance of redemption, because he feels like he’s failed Noah before.

So, at first, Rafe’s promise brings my two heroes together. But as the story progresses, Rafe’s promise keeps him firmly stuck in the past, unable to move forward with Logan. And in the end, it’s the promise that threatens to break them apart.

What was your favorite part writing this novel?

This story is probably a lot more personal than some of my other stories. I wrote Promise Me after losing my job. IRL I’m a project manager. I live on plans, schedules and lists and suddenly the well established blueprint for my life was completely gone.

So, I guess it’s no surprise that I wrote a story about two men who get thrown together at a time when their whole world changes dramatically. Logan Tate’s life hasn’t been all roses, but he’s a survivor and he knows what he wants, but he has to fight to keep control of his own fate. Rafe Stanton has made mistakes that haunt him and keep him from moving forward.

I didn’t even need a grand master plan to write this story…my two MCs pretty much battled out their lives word by word right in front of me whenever I turned on my computer. It was a lot of fun to write this book.

What prompted you to start writing?

A dare…

I love to read. I’ll pick up a book over turning on the TV any day. A few years ago, we had this mini beach vacation in Maine planned and I loaded up my Kindle with all kinds of books…and then spent all weekend rewriting everything in my head. Okay, I admit I was pretty snarky and complained a lot to my husband until he challenged me. “If you think you can do it better, prove it.”

Hah! Yeah, that humbled me real quick. It’s very different to dream up a story in my head than to actually put it on paper. Since that summer, I’ve been working hard to improve my writing. I have taken classes and attended conferences and soaked in any bit of feedback I can get for my stories. Sometimes, it’s harsh to hear people criticize my work, but at the same time, I’m completely addicted to writing now. Best challenge ever issued to me!

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

So, I recently found the perfect label for my writing: I’m a quilter.

For a new idea, I usually have a first few scenes in my head, and I do actually write them down—just to try them out and see if they work. Only if I’ve got something that I love, I start plotting, develop character arcs and supporting cast.

For example, for my new book, Promise Me, I started with the rainy funeral scene. But then, I jumped straight to the first time my two MCs Rafe and Logan actually meet. Form there, I tried out the kidnapping…

Promise Me was easy, because I quickly was in love with my characters, so I started to stick my different scenes together to a whole story.

A fortune shouldn’t get you killed. a Promise shouldn’t break your heart.

Attorney Rafe Stanton knows making promises is a dangerous thing. Over and over he has failed to keep people under his protection safe. For years he watched his younger cousin Noah lose his battle with drugs and alcohol, which eventually led to a deadly car accident. When he finds out about Noah’s secret marriage to Logan Tate, Rafe has one last chance for redemption.

Inheriting a fortune should be a blessing, but for Logan life never works out that way. He’s learned the hard way that dreams don’t come true—and if they do, well, there is usually a hefty price tag attached. All he really wants is a quiet life, but that isn’t in the cards when his apartment gets broken into and a pretentious lawyer from Boston arrives thinking he can call the shots.

The two men don’t see eye-to-eye about the inheritance, but with Noah’s powerful family coming after Logan, they find themselves reluctantly on the same side. A gunman, greedy in-laws, and meddling friends are not enough trouble; soon they also need to deal with the explosive chemistry between them.

But Rafe made a promise to the past and Logan doesn’t trust easily, so a future together seems out of reach.
