Today I am so pleased to welcome Katey Hawthorne to Joyfully Jay. Katey has come to talk to us about her latest release, Poor Little Rich Boy. She has also brought along a great giveaway! Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Thanks so much for having me on release day, Jay! I come bearing an exclusive excerpt that strikes right at the heart of Ted’s poor little rich boy dilemma: he needs to get married. Fast.

Excerpt

Ryan asked, “Did your dad really split the business between you and Wally?”

Ted hated to laugh with his mouth full but he couldn’t help it.

For some reason, Ryan’s golden eyes lit. Perhaps he found it funny too.

Ted finally managed, “No, God no. I meant it: it’s mine, just with stipulations.”

“Like?”

“If you must know…” Ted trailed off, suddenly finding the whole situation too ridiculous not to be at least a little funny. He swallowed his olive and laughed again, this time louder. “I have to get married before my birthday.”

Ryan leaned back in his chair. “Bullshit.”

“Oh, believe me, I tried that tack, with his lawyers and my own. No, the only thing for it is to find some poor sap who’ll marry me within the next four months—and put up a good show of it.” Ted couldn’t stop now he’d started chuckling. He hacked off a piece of goat cheese and ate that, then washed it down with more wine. “I’m sure the board will kick about me marrying a man, but they see it coming all the same—and I’ve got some of them on my side for that much, at least.

“Isn’t it ridiculous?”

“It’s weird,” Ryan said. “I mean, I know he freaked out when you told him you were gay—”

“At fifteen! And do you know, he must’ve written his will just about then? The lawyer said it was ten years old. Can you imagine? Hanging on to this for ten years of my life?” Ted’s eyes were starting to burn. He swiped away a laughter tear before going on, “What a total prick. But the gays are getting married, now, so the joke’s on him.”

Slowly but surely, a smile crept onto Ryan’s uncertain face. “Bet you didn’t think it was funny when they read the will.”

“I didn’t,” Ted admitted, holding up his wine glass. “But now I’ve got a way to win, I do.” And he found that was absolutely true. This was going to be hilarious, and it was going to give Wally fits, and what more could he ask, really?

“How will you win?” Ryan raised his glass and they clinked, then drank.

“By marrying the most ridiculous person I can find,” Ted said, matter-of-factly. The plan seemed more and more entertaining, now he was giving it real, drunken thought. “It can’t be a woman, obviously, since that’s what the old man wanted. Whoever it is, I’ll take them around town to all the society parties and galas. I’ll set them up in a gorgeous apartment and lavish my father’s money on them. And all they have to do is stay married to me for ten years.”

“Ten years!”

“I know, it’s a problem, but I’ll make it worth their while. Two million, over the ten years, aside from room and board and gifts.”

“Jesus!”

“Exactly.”

“Shit, I’ll do it.”

Ted stopped laughing. “I’m serious, Ryan. This looks like the path of least resistance for me. I mean to do it.”

“Me too,” Ryan insisted. “Why not? It should be with a friend—otherwise they’ll just take advantage of you.”

“Yes, the idea is that they should take advantage of me. That’s part of why the old man loses.”

“But what if they bail before the ten years is up? You can’t, like, make someone not divorce you. I mean, are you going to just not give them a divorce? That’s twisted.”

Ted frowned and reached for a Marcona almond. “You’re right. I’ll just have to hope the second million at the end of the ten years is incentive enough. I could always raise it if not.”

“Teddy.” Ryan reached out and took his hand where it lay on the table.

Ted looked up, mouth open, almond on his tongue all but forgotten.

“I mean, I know we’ve been drinking for a few hours, but you sound insane. You can’t trust a stranger with that.”

Ted blinked, uncomprehending. “There is literally no one I could trust with this. That’s why I’m going to pay for it.”

“Okay…” Ryan looked troubled, though. “So—pay me?”

Ted frowned. “Were you serious?”

“Well, yeah. I mean, we’ll have to iron out the kinks but… why not?”

“Because you couldn’t marry anyone else for the next decade. What if you find someone you—you want to be with? It’s a miracle you’re single now,” Ted blurted.

Ryan smiled, slow and sweet, like he knew a delicious secret.

Ted took his hand back, flushing. Goddamn pale skin showed everything, too, and he knew it. “You know what I mean.”

Blurb

Ted MacTaggart’s overbearing father is still trying to control his life, even from the grave. His will insists that, in order to inherit the family company, MAC Superior, Ted must be married by his twenty-fifth birthday — and the marriage has to be “real.” As in the board of MAC has to sign off on it.

Ted could fight the will, but then the handsome, artistic Ryan Costa, an old friend from school days walks back into his life, offering to be his groom-of-convenience. Ted draws up the contracts and Ryan, who has family medical bill problems, agrees gladly to the terms. Ted, emotionally walled off and afraid of his attraction to Ryan, also suggests they should keep their relationship strictly professional. Caring for people has always proven a weakness for him. Now isn’t the time to start.

It’s not long before Ryan’s charm breaks through Ted’s walls, but Ted isn’t his own worst enemy in this case. Other forces are vying for MAC Superior, and even when their relationship is becoming the real deal, its shaky foundations land Ryan and Ted in trouble.
