“I’m worried about him, but more so about that house. Blue’s been alarmingly casual about it.”

“He just sees it as a chance to get to know his dad,” I say, and in truth, I’ve barely thought about the actual job.

He grimaces. “Well, he needs to take it seriously, Levi. That’s a house with a terrible reputation.”

A shiver runs down my spine. “What do you mean?”

“It’s supposed to be one of the most haunted places in England.”

“Declan said that.”

“Well, it’s never been tested, but rumours have been rife for years that there are some very violent spirits there. I’ve heard that the reason the viscount’s father never allowed any psychic researchers on the premises was because he was scared of being sued if someone got hurt.”

I sit back in my chair. “Shit,” I say.

He huffs. “You can say that again.”

“How do you know so much about this?”

“Because they asked me to go there too.” I gape at him in surprise, and he waves his hand dismissively. “I said no.”

“Why?” I ask.

He looks deep in thought for a second. “Because it’s trouble, and I thought I was too old for that.” He taps the table. “But I rang up today and accepted the offer.”

“Why?” I ask again.

He smiles. “You know why, Levi. It’s the same reason that you’re going to move heaven and earth to go with that boy of yours.”

That cold runs down my spine again. “Because he’s going to need us.”

He nods solemnly. “A great deal before all this is over.”

He nods solemnly. “A great deal before all this is over. I don’t need a Crow to tell me that.”

I blink. What’s a bird got to do with it? However, after a year of Blue and Tom, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s best not to ask too many questions.

“I’m not sure how I can help him, to be honest,” I say slowly. “I mean, I’m a cartoonist. I’m a bit boring. What can I possibly do that can help Blue with these amazing abilities of his? I’m just an onlooker in this world of yours and Blue’s.”

He shakes his head, looking at me affectionately. “Lad, you’re the centre of that world. Everyone knows it, and I’m surprised you can’t see it. He needs you to tether him to the ground.”

“Maybe he’d be better flying free,” I say, speaking my deepest fear.

“Ah, Levi, all that flying free gets you is a crick in the neck and sore shoulders.” He pats me on the shoulder and then stands and walks to the door. “And I think you’re somehow the glue that sticks us all together. This strange little family of ours.”

Blurb

quiet house coverLevi Black has mostly recovered from the events of a year ago. The only lingering effects are that he’s much more well known in York than he’d like to be, and he’s a lot more cautious about walking around his house naked. However, those events brought him the capricious and fascinating Blue, so he’s not complaining. On the contrary, he’s happy, in love, and looking forward to Blue finally moving in with him. And if sometimes he wonders what Blue sees in a boring cartoonist, he keeps that to himself.

Blue Billings is finally ready to throw off the memories of his past and move in with the person who means the most in the world to him. His psychic abilities have grown in the last year to his mentor Tom’s consternation, but Blue is determined to look on the bright side. He’s also focused on ignoring all the warning signs that he’s received lately.

However, even deeply buried secrets have a way of rising to the surface. And when a surprise from Blue’s past turns up and draws them away to a lonely house on the Yorkshire moors, Levi and Blue must fight for their survival once again.

From bestselling author, Lily Morton, comes the second book in the Black & Blue series. The books are intended to be read in order.
