Today I am so pleased to welcome Sue Brown to Joyfully Jay. Sue has come to talk to us about her latest release, Island Detective. She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

For a moment, Olaf thought the world had stopped. He couldn’t hear the sounds of the cars passing him, the people talking in excited voices. Then he was shoved from behind and he could hear again, but too loudly, as if someone had turned the volume up extra loud.

“You’re standing in the doorway,” a man grumbled, then he was gone down the street and Olaf was back in the world.

“Olaf? Did you hear me?”

Olaf heard Bunch’s worried voice. “Yes, I’m sorry. How…badly is he hurt?”

“He’s got a skull fracture, a concussion and a broken nose, and his right arm is in plaster.”

Okay. Okay. Not serious. Skull fracture! Paul is fine. Deep breaths, Skandik. Focus.

“What happened?” he asked.

“A bloke got lively in the custody suite last night. He was hammered. He took exception to Paul’s pretty face.”

Last night? He’s been in hospital all this time and they tell me now? Then thank God I didn’t drink a pint.

Olaf knew Bunch was trying to make him feel better, but it really wasn’t working. He’d been shot when he first met Paul. Paul had watched it on the TV in Liam’s hospital room. They’d only just met each other at that point, but Paul had once confessed he still had nightmares about it. Now Olaf knew how he felt.

“Anyway, Paul wasn’t going to tell you, but you’re his emergency contact, and he’ll need to be picked up from the hospital if they discharge him.”

Of course Paul wasn’t going to tell him. Olaf clenched his jaw. He was going to kill his lover slowly and painfully, concussion or not. “I’m on the next ferry. When’s he going to be released? If it’s soon, I can get his mum to pick him up.”

“That’s great. And tell him not to think of coming back to work. The chief super has banned him from the building for the next two weeks.”

Olaf barked out a laugh. “I’ll bring him down here.”

“That’s a relief,” Bunch admitted. “You know he’s a nightmare when he’s bored.”

Olaf had an excellent way of occupying Paul, but he didn’t need to discuss that with his colleague. “Leave it with me, Andy. I’ve got to go. I’ve got a ferry to catch.”

“Thanks, Olaf. And don’t worry when you see him. He’s banged up but he’ll be fine and as annoying as ever.”

Olaf would reserve judgement until he saw his boy for himself. As for annoying, that was a given.

As soon as he disconnected the call from Bunch, he called Paul’s mom. He strode towards his car as he waited for her to answer. He heard a click, then he held the phone away from his ear as seventies rock was blasted into his ear, only to be turned off abruptly.

“Hi, sorry about that,” Mattie said breathlessly.

“Mattie, it’s Olaf.”

“Olaf, sweetheart. I was going to call you at the weekend about your new job. How are you?”

“Mattie, Paul’s in St Hughes.”

“Is he okay?” Fear infused her voice and Olaf hurried to reassure her.

“According to Andy Bunch, a skull fracture but not serious, a broken arm, concussion, and bruising on his face. I’m heading to my car, and I’ll get the first ferry over, but could you talk to the hospital and maybe collect him if they want to release him? He was taken in last night, but I’ve only just found out.”

Mattie let out an impressive stream of curse words. Olaf grinned. Paul was going to be in trouble with Mattie as well as him.

“Jim can pick him up. You said St Hughes?” Mattie asked.

It was the closest one to Darrow Road police station where Paul worked.

“We’re on our way. Are you driving up?”

“I’m in Ryde. I’ll head for the ferry now. Just let me know if I’m driving to you or the hospital. And when you see him, tell him I’m gonna kill him.”

“With pleasure.”

“And will you tell Sam and the others?”

“I can do that,” she agreed.
