A ping told Ben his results were ready. He opened the browser window and scanned the output. The program ran automated searches on a list of keywords and names, looking for any mentions in the news, social media, public records, and some other resources he could access through his PI license—a quick and dirty snapshot.

An obituary told him he could cross one man off his watch list. Another man on the list had been sent to prison. Most of the results had nothing to do with Cape May, which was exactly what Ben wanted to see. He was nearly at the end of the list, ready to relax, when an unwelcome name caught his attention.

“Son of a bitch,” Ben muttered.

Enzo Rossi was a mid-level enforcer for the Bianchi Family in Newark. He’d been present the night Ben got shot but had managed to evade doing serious time. The last Ben knew, Rossi did two years in prison and was out early for good behavior. Now Rossi was in the wind, having ghosted on his parole officer.

“Shit.” Ben stared at the screen as if the display might magically change.

The racketeering sting that Ben had been part of damaged the Bianchi Family but didn’t put it out of business. Fighting the Mob was like playing Whack-A-Mole. Even the Feds didn’t expect to wipe them out completely. The goal was to take down the leaders, seize assets, tie up time and money in legal proceedings, and chip away at profits.

Rossi had been loyal muscle protecting Salvatore “Sonny” Bianchi, the target of Ben’s sting. Ben had been undercover as a bartender at a nightclub owned by a Rossi cousin—one who had already worked out a deal to save his skin if he rolled over on the others. Ben’s bartender persona had hit it off with Rossi, who had been an unwitting source of information. When it all went down, Ben felt certain Rossi took the betrayal personally.

Ben leaned back, drumming his fingers on the arms of his chair. If he’d left the Newark PD on better terms, he might have been able to call someone to get in on the chatter about what Rossi might be up to and where he’d gone. But the sting had outed a dirty cop, and rather than clean house, the department had circled the wagons, forced Ben out, and paid a settlement.

The Newark cops wanted a piece of Ben’s hide about as much as the Bianchis did.
