Today I am so pleased to welcome Katey Hawthorne to Joyfully Jay. Katey has come as part of the Coastal Magic Blog Tour to talk to us about her Superpowered Love series. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Back in 2020, which feels like a decade ago, Coastal Magic was my last time going places and seeing people before COVID crunched us all. I cannot wait to go again in 2022, see familiar faces and new ones, and enjoy all the panels, events, and book-loving humans… safely and from a distance, obviously.coastal magic badge

Last time, Superpowered Love 9: Under Siege, had just come out. This time, the series has just finished with Superpowered Love 10: A New Beginning, so it feels right. This series has been a decade in the making, with each book (except the last) standing entirely on its own. Of course, if you read them all at once you’d spy many an easter egg, as they’re called, in references to other books and people–but hopefully they’re still just as enjoyable without! Book 1, Equilibrium, is a fast-paced romp (that’s only $.99 at Smashwords right now). The final book could be called the same, except it’s a little more intense (there’s a cult-type situation… really) and wraps up the tiny loose threads from all the books. I think of the series as chronicling the progression of a world, and the heroes’ love stories move it along to its grand finale.

I’m gonna celebrate it like hell when I get to Daytona Beach. Who’s in?

Coastal Magic Convention is a casual reader weekend in Daytona Beach and takes place February 24-27, 2022. You can check out the website at http://CoastalMagicConvention.com if you want to learn a little more about the event. And if you are interested in signing up, you can register here

“Tre Derringer? Holy shit.” Whoever it was laughed. Footsteps came my way.

I turned and froze when I saw him. Tall, dark, and a total snack—the unmistakable glowing face (his skin was perfect, the bastard) and lazy-confident stride of Dorian Archer. Fuck, he’s still hot. Fuck.

By the time I unfroze, he’d reached me, holding out one hand.

Automatically, I took it. This was a mistake, but I only realized that once he pulled me into a one-armed, back-slapping hug, squeezing my hand between us. He smelled like static electricity in the air after a lightning strike. And sweat. God, he was still tight, too. Tighter than he had been in high school, even. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

“It’s been, like, four years! Holy shit,” he repeated as he finally let me go, his deep brown eyes moving up and down as he took me in. The beautiful bastard had the nerve to look appreciative, even. “Bro, you look good.”

My face went hot. I wished, not for the first time, that I had his skin; not only was it perfect, it was dark brown and hid a blush way better than mine. “Yeah, not bad yourself.” Total fucking snack. Ugh.

“I haven’t seen you since Bea’s graduation party. When we—”

“Played Seven Minutes in Heaven, right.” I had to cut him off. I couldn’t let him say it. I’d blush way worse.

His smile was slow and his eyes knowing. “It was a lot longer than seven minutes.”

I couldn’t help chuckle, because, “Yeah, well. It was a long time coming.” If I’d had any goddamn idea Dorian “winner of the yearbook’s Prettiest Eyes category” Archer was into dudes, I would’ve tried it sooner. Okay, probably not, but I would’ve put us in a situation where he could, if he wanted, like all the goddamn time.

“Wasted time.” He shook his head with mock sadness, his eyes crinkling at the corners, those long black lashes fluttering once, mesmerizing me. “Where you been? I heard… Oh shit, did you go to prison?” He winced after he said it, like he wanted to take it back.

But I just shrugged. “Yeah. Been out for five months. I fucked up. What can I say?”

“Dude, that sucks.”

“Especially for us.” I made a vague gesture like I was going to call up fire. I didn’t even try, but I knew he’d get it. Dorian was from a long and powerful line of electrical manipulators. His family was one of the cool ones, but I still figured that put him out of my league. If being a football and baseball star and also handsome as fuck hadn’t done that already.

“Yoooooo,” he said, voice low and brow furrowing. “Tell me about it sometime. What you doing for dinner?”

Superpowered Love 10: A New Beginning

Tre Derringer, perpetual underachiever with negative self-esteem, made a mistake. If he’d been a sleeper—sans and unaware of superpowers, that is—he would’ve gotten a slap on the wrist. Too bad Tre has awakened hot-thermal superpowers, so he ended up in lockup instead.

One year later, Tre’s picked up from prison by a mysterious woman called Amy, who turns out to be a recruiter for an activist group—or so they call themselves. New Dawn, New Day’s leader, Vic, is out to bring the presence of the awakened to sleeper attention once and for all, by any means necessary.

Tre becomes a part of the ND2 commune, committed to their mission. But then, at a summer music festival, he runs into a crush from his past, Dorian Archer. Dorian’s compassionate, cheerful, and even hotter than he used to be. He might just manage to keep Tre from making an epic mistake… or he might not.
