When his long thin black hummingbird tongue unfurled from between his human lips, I almost fainted.

“What the hell was that?” I asked, looking right at Doc Baker.

“Oh, dear me, I am sorry,” the doc said. “I forget sometimes what that looks like to a non-hummingbird shifter.”

“Yeah, it’s slightly freaky,” Romeo said, wearing a smirk. “Not that you’re freaky or anything, Doc. I didn’t mean it like that. I only meant that it was unexpected.”

“Unexpected, yes,” I repeated.

Doc Baker snorted. “Most of the time I do it without thinking about it at all. In fact, I only think about it after someone makes mention or when they faint…whichever comes first.”

“It just…your tongue just shifts independent of the rest of your body like that?” Romeo asked. He smirked. “Sorry, not that I’m trying to pick on you, Doc Baker, because that’s the last thing I mean, believe me. It’s just that I’ve never seen a body part do anything independent of the rest of their body.”

“I once had a friend with a cadaver ACL replacement which went one direction when the other knee went the other way,” Sid said. “He ended up in the splits a lot,” the old witch added.

“Are you shitting me?” Romeo asked. His eyes were as round as saucers as he stared at our elderly friend.

Sid turned to look at him. “Of course, I’m shitting you, Sheriff,” the old man said. “That isn’t possible.” He turned to look at Jacob and Lyra as if they held the keys to all knowledge in the universe—which they probably did but no one was talking about that at the moment—in any case, the old witch stared at them. “That’s not possible, right?”

Hannibal, the guardians, and the rest of us started laughing.

“You people all belong in an institution,” Romeo said. He laughed, shaking his head as he turned back to the doctor.

Blurb

true order coverWhen I came to Prosper Woods, the last thing I expected was to be walking into a world of magic. After six months, I’ve learned to live with the fact that paranormal is real. I count many odd creatures as friends, not to mention my soulmate, a vampire who makes me tremble when he kisses me.

When I came to Prosper Woods, my expectations were low. I brought Robert’s bones, and also his ancient tomes. When Sergio showed up demanding I give him the books, I banished him with the help of a spell and a friendly witch.

I didn’t expect to become alpha of my werewolf pack and fall in love with my best friend. Werewolf royalty moved into town, bad vampires were about to go to war with us, and the biggest surprise of all…the unicorns had a king of their own. I don’t know what’s about to happen, but I want to avoid war. With Sam by my side, I’m pretty sure I can face anything.
