Excerpt
The road levels out, and then the trees clear, and I see a hotel in front of us. It’s painted white and sits on the edge of a beach, the sand glowing white in the fierce sunlight. It looks elegant and very, very posh.
“Wow,” I say. “I thought I’d seen all the rich places on the island.” I look at him. “And you’re thinking of buying this. How much is it up for sale?” He names a sum of money that makes my eyes water. “Fucking hell,” I breathe. “You’re joking.”
He pulls up to a parking spot in front of the hotel and turns off the engine. “I rarely joke about money.”
“Well, maybe you should start. That’s incredible.”
He shrugs. “We have a lot of properties,” he says almost apologetically. “My family has been in the hotel business for a great many years.”
“Do all your family work in the business?”
“No. My grandfather was ill and retired last year, and my father took over as CEO. When he retires, it will all be mine.”
“What do you do now?”
“I used to be responsible for hotel acquisition, but I’ve been mostly based in the Venice offices since my grandfather retired. The individual directors report to me, and I oversee the properties in our portfolio and analyse current market trends.”
“So, what does your dad do?”
He gives a humourless bark of laughter. “If you find out, maybe you can tell me.”
“Ouch.”
He grimaces. “He mostly tries to keep up with my stepmother’s spending and her rather tumultuous moods.”
“I think I’d rather troubleshoot sewage myself.”
The shadow fades from his face, and he gives an easier laugh. “You must have met her.” A concierge walks towards the Jeep. Mateo turns back to me. “We’re incognito. I don’t want people to know who I am. I don’t need them to know that I’m interested in buying the place. It will send the price sky-high.”
I nod as we get out of the car. The concierge gives an ingratiating smile and a bow, nearly kissing the pavement. “Senor Rossi,” he says reverently. “May I say what a wonderful pleasure it is to have you here?”
Mateo looks over at me, and I bite my lip to stop my laughter.
Two hours later, we walk out of the hotel and slide our sunglasses on.
“Well,” he says meditatively. “So that’s how an anonymous hotel inspection works, Wren.”
I start to laugh. “Yeah, that incognito wotsit went really well.” He groans and I laugh harder. When I’ve finished, I look at him and snort. “So is the service usually that fawning for you, because that was like travelling with Brad Pitt. Minus all those children.”

Can a summer romance last forever?
Wren Roberts thought he’d found his fairy tale when he met Mateo Rossi on holiday in Majorca. The wealthy and successful older man swept him off his feet, and before he knew it, he’d thrown caution to the wind and was living in Mateo’s waterside apartment in Venice. It’s a far cry from his harsh upbringing and crummy flat in London.
But as the summer turns to autumn, cracks begin to show. Mateo’s family aren’t welcoming, and there doesn’t seem to be a place for Wren in Mateo’s world. He could have coped with all of that, but Mateo himself seems like a different person away from the sunshine island.
Should Wren have been more cautious in riding off into the sunset when he wasn’t sure what lay over the horizon?
From bestselling author Lily Morton comes a romance about two men who find that sometimes happily ever after doesn’t end there.
