Chapter 14 Excerpt
Deci approached the table with Alec and Harper’s drinks. “Are you okay, Detective? You look rather out of sorts tonight.”
Damien cleared his throat. “Yeah, I’m just exhausted.”
“Can I get you boys something to drink?”
“I’ll just stick with water for now.” Damien sounded more than just exhausted, each breath coming out on a weighted exhale.
Jac ordered a cocktail and a round of appetizers for everyone. Alec smiled appreciatively at him before turning his attention back to Damien, leaning close so they could talk privately.
“Not sleeping well?”
“Nothing new when I’m on a big case.” Damien squeezed Alec’s knee. “I appreciate the concern, though.”
Despite his words, Damien’s grip loosened a moment later, and a soft groan rumbled up his throat.
“Hey, you sure you’re all right, Damien?” Jac asked. “You’re getting pale. Maybe you should head home, and we’ll do this another time.”
Alec gripped the back of Damien’s neck, encountering hot and clammy skin. “You’re burning up. Come on, I’ll walk you home. Harper, call if you need anything, yeah?”
“Do you need help with him?” she asked, sliding her chair back to stand.
Shaking his head, Alec also stood. “I shouldn’t.”
It took some effort to get Damien out of his chair, and despite Alec’s denial, Harper helped anyway. Alec slipped under Damien’s arm and grabbed his waist. A few stumbling steps toward the door, and they found a rhythm that worked. “I must be coming down with something.” Alec frowned at the slur in Damien’s voice. “Sorry about this.”
Maybe. Damien’s condition was deteriorating quickly enough to concern Alec. It didn’t seem normal.
Harper held the door open for them. “Got it from here?”
“Thanks. Yeah, I’ve got him.” Alec readjusted his grip and led Damien out into the night.
As they approached the apartment complex, Alec nudged Damien. “Does this building have a keypad entry?”
“To the left of the door.” Damien mumbled a sequence of numbers. After a moment, Alec found the pad and entered the code. The building still had a physical keypad instead of the newer digital interface or a fob.
After a few false starts up the stairs, they finally arrived at Damien’s apartment. Damien fumbled in his pocket for his apartment key. Inside, Alec led him straight to the bed. “Okay, let’s get you comfortable.”
“So tired. Undress later. Sleep now.” Damien fell back on the bed, his breath evening out almost immediately. Alec bit back a grin at how adorable it was, but his concern immediately overrode the amusement. He removed each of Damien’s shoes and set them out of the way before rotating the man to a better position on the bed.
Alec grabbed a bowl in the kitchen and filled it with cool water. Good thing Damien had given Alec that tour. In the bathroom, Alec searched around until he found the small linen closet filled with towels and washcloths. He grabbed a cloth and returned to Damien’s side, dipping the cloth in the water before setting the bowl on the nightstand.
If Damien wasn’t better by morning, he would call Ari, but Alec wasn’t leaving the man alone like this. He sat on the edge of the bed and draped the cloth over Damien’s forehead.

S.A. Pavlik writes what she wants to read, but it doesn’t exist… yet. An avid reader, she first discovered and promptly devoured hundreds of M/M Romance novels in 2019 and it rekindled her desire to write. She started her debut novel, Death of the Moon, the very next year.
She was born and raised in Wisconsin where it’s too cold but she loves it there anyway. She lives with her husband and her furbaby—a needy, elderly, deaf cat named Rise (Ree-say). Because who uses names that are instantly pronounceable? When she isn’t reading or writing, she’s obsessively playing video games or proving that an introvert can be an extrovert on the internet after all.
