He heard Ben turn on the shower—a retrofit in the old apartment that added the fixture and a curtain surround to the large claw-foot tub. As much as Erik loved his apartment, Ben’s place was modern and spacious, with a large walk-in tiled shower big enough for both of them.

I can’t blame him if he wanted me to move there. We’d probably kill ourselves if we tried to have sex in my shower. Or flood the shop.

“You know, I saw a video where the two guys had steamy sex in one of those old-fashioned tubs,” Ben said when he walked out. One look at him, shirtless and still toweling off his hair, made Erik’s heart skip a beat.

“I saw that video too. I’m pretty sure those guys were ten years younger than we are. I don’t think I was ever quite that bendy,” Erik replied. He was thirty-five, hardly ancient. Ben was two years younger, not enough of a gap to make any real difference. Still, Erik doubted he could twist into the same positions as the actors to get both of them into the tub, let alone having enough traction and flexi? bility to manage sex.

“Gotta have goals, man,” Ben teased.

Erik cleaned up quickly, then joined Ben in the kitchen. The coffeemaker was on a timer, and Ben had poured cups for both of them. Erik scrambled eggs while Ben made toast and checked on the bacon in the oven. They moved around each other seamlessly, and Erik thought once more how right it seemed.

It’s only been a few months. I don’t want to rush him. There’s no hurry. Want to make sure I don’t screw this up.

“Wish me luck,” Erik said, pulling himself out of his thoughts. “Jaxon’s sending over one of the people from the center to help go through the boxes of memorabilia. Should be interesting.”

Ben snorted. “Do you remember the last time you went through a box of old stuff? Got us tangled up with the Commodore Wilson scan? dal.” Hidden pictures in an old clock that Ben found and a long-ago letter in the bottom of a box of “junk” had launched them into a dangerous off- the-books investigation that solved a murder and unearthed old secrets.

“Hoping we’ll be luckier this time.” Erik turned out the eggs onto two plates. Ben retrieved the bacon from the oven and got the toast when it popped up. They took their breakfast to the table, and Erik thought again how comfortable and natural it felt.

“So…missing your big orgy shower?” he teased. They had joked that there was room for more than just two in Ben’s shower—enough for a whole party.

“It’s nice, but I have a hard time seeing the place as anything except a rental unit,” Ben confessed. “Your apartment has character.”

“Is that a nice way of saying it’s old?”

Ben grinned. “Maybe. But in a good way. And with all the freaky- weird stuff that shows up at the shop, you’ve got protections built in.”

Erik sobered. “Magical protections. Good against witches, hexes, curses, ghosts. Plain-old-human gangsters? Not so sure about that.”

Not too long ago, Erik would have said he didn’t believe in most of that. Ghosts? Sure—that wasn’t too weird. And he’d had his own experiences with touch magic, knowing far more about an object from handling it than could be explained in any normal way. But the rest? Until he’d seen it for himself, Erik hadn’t realized that there was a lot more going on in the world than he had imagined.
