The house phone rings as I come down the stairs. I rush to answer it, but the phone isn’t where it should be. Where have I put it? I scratch my beard contemplatively and look around.

There’s a click, and when I look back, the phone is sitting neatly in its holder.

“Thanks, Rosalind,” I call to Blue’s ghostly housemate.

I pick it up and answer cautiously. I hope it isn’t someone asking for Blue. Those calls can get pretty fucking strange very quickly.

“Where the hell were you, Will? I’ve been ringing for ages.”

I smile at the sound of my best friend’s voice. “Coming down the stairs, diva. I’m so sorry I don’t move as quickly as everyone else does to gratify you.”

He laughs. “And you should consider remedying that. It’d make you feel a lot happier.”

“Why are you ringing on the landline? Are we back in the seventies? I have got a mobile, you know.”

“Which you never answer. I’ve been ringing that for half an hour. Tell me you haven’t lost it again. You need a search and rescue dog to track all your shit.”

I pat my pocket and curse at finding it empty. “Sorry. I’ve got no idea where I’ve put it.”

“Ask Rosalind. You know she lives to make you happy.”

I look around cautiously. “She’s not exactly living,” I whisper.

He laughs. “But she really does love you.”

Rosalind is a ghost. She haunted this house when Levi inherited it because she was committed to solving a century-old mystery. However, once that was done, she stayed around and now cohabits very happily with Blue and Levi.

“What’s up?” I ask. “Are you having a good time?”

“The best. Levi’s spent the last two days showing me the sights.”

I smile. I love the gentle man who is Blue’s boyfriend. “Confess. He’s spent two days showing you his cock.”

He snorts. “Don’t be ridiculous. I’ve seen that lots of times. We’re an old couple now. Sex is on the back burner.”

“Really?”

“Pshaw. No. We bang all the time.”

“Delightful news. So, why are you ringing me? Is it just to brag about your sex life?”

“Better than dissecting your complete lack of one. How long is it since you got laid?”

“I told you. I’ve given up shagging around for a bit while I get my life together. I don’t want any complications.”

“Probably best considering the last person you shagged was Isabelle, who, as you’ll remember, showed up at the squat after you cut and ran and did her own bit of cutting by slashing your sleeping bag to bits.”

I groan. “Can we not talk about this?”

“And Mikey, who waited outside the squat so long the council were considering charging him council tax.”

“What a lovely conversation we’re having, but I mustn’t keep you. Should you not be letting Levi take you up the Shard?”

“Is that a euphemism?”

sceptic coverArcana Books, Book 1

As the best friend of a psychic, Will Buchanan can’t help but believe in the dead. It’s the living that he finds to be problematic. However, after a spate of betrayals, he finally has the chance of a new life within his grasp, and he’s not going to risk it for anyone or anything. Staying safe is the name of Will’s game.

Jem Dawson defines the word temporary. A talented cameraman, he’s here today and will undoubtedly be gone tomorrow chasing adventure and danger. But, while he’s in York, he’s made it clear he wants Will, and Will can’t help liking the charming daredevil.

This inconvenient attraction results in Will accompanying Jem to the site of a notorious poltergeist outbreak. A malevolent spirit has targeted a family, and now the ghost hunting team for whom Jem does camerawork are going to be locked down in the house for three days.

The house is strange and filled with sinister and violent undercurrents. One by one, the group experiences threatening incidents, and as events escalate, Will has to ask himself if he’s risking not just his heart but also his life with this impulsive gesture.

This is the first book in the Arcana Books series featuring characters from the bestselling Black and Blue series.
