Cassius’s palms itched for the Stark Steel blade strapped to his waist.
“This place will soon be surrounded,” he said calmly. “Even if you were to kill everyone in here, you would not walk out of this building alive.”
His level tone did nothing to pacify the man. Brock snatched a little boy from his mother’s arms, dragged him to the far end of the reception, and locked an arm around his throat. Ice skittered down Cassius’s spine.
“I swear to God, I will kill this kid if you take a single step forward!” Brock spat.
He pressed the barrel of his gun to the child’s temple. Cries of horror filled the reception area. The child’s mother lunged forward.
“Stop!” Cassius barked.
She stumbled and fell onto her hands and knees, her sobs loud as she gazed desperately at her son.
Cassius never broke eye contact with the boy. “What’s your name?”
Tears streamed down the kid’s face. He stayed frozen, as if he sensed his very life depended on it.
“It’s—it’s Mi—Michael!” he hiccupped.
Cassius’s mouth curved in a faint smile. “It’s gonna be okay, Michael. Now, close your eyes.”
The boy’s lips parted on a gasp. His pupils widened, his gaze rising to the black and red wings that had unfurled from Cassius’s back. He squeezed his eyes shut.
Brock’s jaw sagged open. “You’re—you’re that guy! That goddamn angel everyone’s talking ab—!”
Heaven’s Light flooded the room, making everyone squint.
Cassius moved.
Brock choked as he found himself slammed bodily against the ceiling, his gun falling limply from his fingers and his hostage free below them. He gawped vapidly at Cassius before clawing at the fingers wrapped around his throat, clearly unable to comprehend what had just happened.
Few could grasp the movements of an Empyreal, let alone a demigod.
“You’re under arrest,” Cassius said coldly, the seraphic light projected from his pupils painting Brock’s face a stark white. “Anything you say can and will—”
Something glinted out the corner of Cassius’s eye. A blade had appeared in Brock’s hand. He wrinkled his brow.
This guy really is a moron!
He was about to tell Brock the knife wasn’t made of Stark Steel and would not inflict a single scratch on him when the front door exploded inward and a dark whirlwind filled the room. One that smelled green and fresh and full of the rage of a demigod.
Brock was wrenched from Cassius’s grasp by Morgan.
“I’ve got this!” Cassius protested.
His lover did not acknowledge his words, the seraphic fire in his eyes telling Cassius he was beyond hearing him. Brock screamed as Morgan carried him through the gaping remains of the entrance, his Sword of Wind in hand and his body wreathed in black currents mixed with the iridescent green magic stemming from his Dryad lineage.
Deathly stillness descended upon the clinic in the wake of their departure. It was broken by the sounds of vehicles squealing to a violent stop outside and a cacophony of horns.
Cassius blew out a sigh, retracted his Empyreal powers, and landed lightly on his feet amidst the broken glass littering the floor. “Adrianne, we have another situation.”
“I can see the situation just fine, Cassius!” Adrianne snapped in his ears. “The situation is currently carrying our suspect into the sky!”
“Fuck!” Cassius swore.
