Why here, and why now?

Russ’s wolf didn’t like the possibility of an unknown danger, and his Libra nature demanded answers. He took any threat to his town and his “pack” of friends seriously.

And to our mate, his wolf reminded him.

Russ knew it was pointless to argue with his other half, especially when the wolf was right. As raw and real as his grief had been yesterday at Anthony’s grave, the sheer fury that rose inside him at the thought of any harm to Liam just confirmed that they were truly fated mates.

Then I’d better help the chief get to the bottom of this.

By noon, his crew had finished all they could do at the scene. But they had barely returned to the firehouse and showered before a call came in for EMTs to deal with a near-drowning at Forked Lake, a popular campground. At least that was a win since the boy would likely be fine despite his close call.

“Go home,” the chief said when the crew returned from the lake. “The next shift came in early. Get some rest. Nice work.”

Russ walked out of the firehouse with Justin, Brandon, and Ty. They looked as weary as he felt, and Russ knew that even after showering, they would all smell of smoke for a long while.

“Hey, Russ, want to come over to my place and watch a movie?” Brandon asked, making Russ realize he’d been lost in his thoughts.

“Sounds fun, but not today,” he replied, torn between calling Liam to ask him to dinner and just walking half a block to knock on his door.

“Well, if you change your mind, you know where to find us,” Brandon said, heading out with the others as Russ debated his next move.

He ended up calling and found himself pacing as he waited for Liam to pick up. “Liam? It’s Russ. I’m so sorry I had to miss coffee this morning, but if you’re free, I’d like to take you to dinner tonight.”

“Are you okay? And yes, dinner sounds good.”

Russ picked up a note of worry in Liam’s voice that warmed his heart. “I’m fine, although I’m going to smell like smoke for a few days. Which means going somewhere casual tonight, but I’ll absolutely give you a raincheck for somewhere fancier another time.”

“I haven’t been anywhere here except the coffee shop, so I’m open to new experiences,” Liam assured him. “When do you want to go?”

“I can be on your front porch in five minutes. Too soon?”

Liam chuckled. “Works for me. I was just realizing it had been a long time since lunch.”

Russ might have shaved a minute or two off that ETA, struggling to walk the line between “enthusiastic” and “stalker.”

If you just brought him a nice, plump rabbit, it would be simpler, his wolf pointed out.

I’m too tired to hunt. Is there predator take-out?

His wolf sniffed, giving him a slit-eyed look of annoyance and padded off. Russ knocked on Liam’s door, trying not to rock back and forth like a teenager on his first date.

“You weren’t kidding on the time,” Liam said with a grin, stepping out onto the porch and locking the door behind him. He wore a snug pair of jeans, hiking boots, and a dark green sweater over a button-down shirt that peeked through where his heavy coat hung open.

“I just finished my shift and got cleaned up next door,” Russ replied with a jerk of his head to indicate the station, “Didn’t think it made sense to go home and come in again.” He ran a hand through his hair self-consciously. “Sorry if I smell like a day-old campfire.”

Liam sniffed the air playfully, then leaned closer for a deeper inhale to catch Russ’s scent. Russ’s heart sped when Liam wanted to scent him, a clear indication of interest. He caught a whiff of Liam as well and felt that connection go right to his cock.

“You smell just fine to me,” Liam said, with a twinkle of mischief in his amber eyes and a flirty wink.

“Diner okay?” Russ asked, to keep himself from overstepping since what he really wanted to do was crowd Liam up against the door and kiss him long and slow.

I will not act like a caveman just because of some stupid hormones. Fated mate or not, we are going to do this in a civilized fashion, he told himself sternly. He felt certain that wolves couldn’t actually snicker, but his certainly seemed to be trying.
