When Coastal Magic asked me to write this post I struggled with choosing a specific topic. I could talk about urban fantasy and how much fun I’ve had writing the Adam Binder series or I could talk about my upcoming rom com, To Catch a Geek. I often get asked to write posts or to speak about my experience as a gay man writing gay characters, but I decided I wanted to speak to the Coastal Magic Community itself, and mostly I just wanted to say thank you.

I was so thankful when I was first invited to join the reader weekend, and quite sad when we had to cancel due to the ongoing pandemic. I feel it was absolutely the right decision, but it was still hard.

David R. Slayton Coastal Magic BadgeDebuting in a pandemic is a strange thing. White Trash Warlock came out when many bookstores were still closed or just reopening for foot traffic, meaning they were highly selective about what they were stocking. A lot of them didn’t risk making space for a urban fantasy about a broke, gay witch from Guthrie, Oklahoma.

I couldn’t hold any in person events when Warlock came out and it was hard to know if the book was landing, if people liked it. Don’t get me wrong, this is a lifetime dream come true. It just didn’t happen how I imagined it would.

Then I got to talk to the Coastal Magic group on zoom and I felt seen. I felt like the book was definitely landing some people, with you.

Watching so many of you read White Trash Warlock and react to it was so rewarding. You all were some of the first readers I got to connect with as a published author. You’ve been awesome and it’s been incredible to watch you follow Adam’s story in Trailer Park Trickster and now Deadbeat Druid. Your support these last three years has been a gift to me and to Adam.

Thank you, Coastal Magic. Thank you for having me as part of your community and thank you for reading, my books and others’. I look forward to seeing you in February.

“The complex world-building, well-shaded depictions of poverty, emotional nuance, and thrilling action sequences make this stand out. Slayton is sure to win plenty of fans.”–Publishers Weekly (starred review) on White Trash Warlock

Not all magicians go to schools of magic.

Adam Binder has the Sight. It’s a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. But for much of Adam’s life, that power has been a curse, hindering friendships, worrying his backwoods family, and fueling his abusive father’s rage.

Years after his brother, Bobby, had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobby’s wife.

It isn’t long before Adam becomes the spirit’s next target. To survive the confrontation, save his sister-in-law, and learn the truth about his father, Adam will have to risk bargaining with very dangerous beings … including his first love.
