My cock leaps against my zipper. Obviously he’s coming on to me, but as usual, I feel like an idiot because I don’t know how to respond. I hate this ridiculous mating dance we all do with each other. I live in fear of fucking it up, saying the wrong thing, and having the person I’m with either laugh at me or, worse, start thinking I’m some kind of creep.

Reed reaches for my hand across the table. He laces our fingers together, and it feels like they’re meant to be that way. A perfect fit, despite the contrast between my pale, scarred, and calloused skin against his smooth, olive skin tone. The strength and precision in his touch takes my breath away for a beat.

Tearing my eyes away from our linked fingers, I look up to find him gazing at me with a soft smile playing around his lips.

“So, as much as I want to kiss you right now, I’m afraid if I do, I won’t be able to stop.” His voice is soft, and he raises our linked hands to his mouth, placing gentle kisses on my knuckles. “Plus, we should really finish our dinner before dessert, right?” He waggles his eyebrows at me, a wicked grin spreading across his face.

I bite back my own smile. “That’s probably a smart idea,” I say, trying to keep a serious look on my face. “But—” I give him what I hope is a sexy smile and bite down on my bottom lip. “—I’m going to need you to eat a lot faster. You aren’t the only one who’s hungry for dessert.” I lick my lips suggestively, and Reed lets out a low, husky chuckle.

“Believe me, I’ll make quick work of this dinner. We’ll have plenty of time to enjoy dessert. I promise, it’ll be worth the wait.” He slides his gaze to my mouth, where it lingers for a second before he smiles and takes another bite of risotto.

This combination of playful and sexy is both confusing and arousing to me. He pushes me out of my social comfort zone, which normally I can’t stand. But I’m starting to realize I’m safe with Reed. He won’t make fun of me or get insulted if I ask a dumb or obvious question. He just makes sure I understand what he means, and then turns it into something we can both laugh about. I’ve never met anyone else who makes me feel that way.

“Quirky.” Ugh, I hate that word. The PC term these days is ‘neuro-divergent’, but I prefer to be called autistic. It’s often a huge advantage to have a brain that works differently, but I sometimes wish it was easier to connect with other people. The things that make me different can make people want to keep their distance, and for a long time I’ve built walls around myself so no one wants to even try breaking through. Helping the sexy ER doctor renovate his house, I discover someone who wants to get closer instead of running away. I think Reed likes me because I’m a little different, not in spite of it. But the gorgeous doctor has a lot of baggage, and I worry that if he sees the parts of me I work so hard to keep under control, he’s going to turn tail and run.

I’ve overcome a lot to get to where I am as a doctor, including parents who loved their bigoted, homophobic church more than their child and an opioid addiction following years of self-loathing. I love my team in the ER, but in my personal life I prefer to fly solo. I’m comfortable behind the carefully built walls that no one, not even my best friend, gets through.

The old fixer-upper in a great neighborhood was supposed to be a side project, but I discovered pretty quickly that home renovations are not as easy as they look on TV. But when one of the sexiest men I’ve ever seen, who happens to be a contractor, shows up in my ER, he feels like the solution to all my problems. What I never expected was that while he was re-building my house, Dylan Campbell would be the first person who makes me want to take my walls down.

When The Walls Come Down is a steamy hurt/comfort MM Romance. It features an autistic home renovation expert, and a doctor scarred by a traumatic childhood. Two people who’ve always been outsiders figuring out how to let each other in.
