“Healing takes a lot of energy.”

His expression didn’t change as he said it, but there was something in his voice. I knew he’d been augmented. Matty had shown us his metal arm, and I could smell the metal in Seven’s scent. I couldn’t help but be curious about what had been done to him even as I chastised myself that it was none of my business. Seven being my potential mate didn’t mean he owed me anything. “It does.”

We sat quietly for a moment. I really was tired. While we’d been walking, I’d pushed it aside, but now, it was easy to lean my head back against the tree and close my eyes for a moment. I let the voices of the others wash over me, let the warmth of Seven’s body lull me.

The next thing I knew I was lifting my head from Seven’s shoulder as a chuckling Zeb wiped a bit of dried saliva from the corner of my mouth.

“Welcome back,” Zeb said, a small, warm smile on his face.

Blinking, I looked around, trying to orient myself. Judging by how much the sun had moved, I’d been out for a while. The sizzle and smell of cooking meat hung in the air too. Zeb’s hunt must have been successful. Glancing to the side, I caught Seven’s gaze. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep on you.”

One corner of his mouth turned up. “No need to apologize. I fell asleep too.”

“You two made quite the sight.” Zeb sat back on his haunches from where he was still kneeling in front of us, the tight length of his calf pressed against the outside of my outstretched leg. He chuckled again. “Not to mention, I could hear you snoring when I was still about half a mile out.”
