Glinda’s castle sat atop a hill surrounded by gently rolling land. Here and there splashed misting waterfalls, and heavily flowered bucolic meadows filled in the gaps. Everything was a shade of red—the grass, the flowers, the trees, even the water tumbling over red rocks on the hillsides. Reddest of all was the castle, carved from deep crimson marble and studded with many fiery rubies, some as small as a fingernail, others as large as a fist.

Hatter and Henry easily scaled the hill on which the castle rested, and stood before the towering structure, admiring it. Beyond the castle, they were surprised to see a decidedly non-red desert, which spread out in shades of buff for as far as the eye could see. The desert looked plain and ordinary and didn’t seem part of Oz at all. At the horizon shimmered a familiar rainbow barrier. Hatter realized the castle must mark the southernmost boundary of the Land of Oz, just as the mountains marked the eastern border between Oz and Wonderland.

Hatter wondered what lay beyond the desert portal but hesitated to give voice to the question for fear Henry would insist on finding out. The very last thing he wanted was yet another delay, not to mention a decidedly miserable trek across hot desert sand, which he was sure would ensue. He fought an internal battle to keep the question behind his teeth, for all he would have liked to discuss the possibilities with Henry.

Questions were such irritating ill-behaved little things. They often refused to stay silent, jumping out of mouths at the most inopportune moments.

All Hatter wanted to do was go home, but he already knew Henry would refuse until they found some way to help the folks of Oz, and he had no idea how long that would take—or if it was even possible. All he knew was it was going to be a good long while before he’d get the cherry tartlet he’d been hungering for, and asking what lay beyond Oz’s border would only cause an additional holdup, not to mention the aforesaid probable arduous walk across the desert under a broiling sun. It was definitely not Hatter’s idea of a good time, and so, with an effort, he swallowed the question. It tasted bitter going down, like some sort of awful medicine, and he made a mental note not to swallow any more questions than absolutely necessary.

“I wonder what lies beyond the desert?” Henry asked. “Is that another portal I see?”

“No, no, not all. There’s nothing interesting out there, I’d wager,” Hatter quickly replied. “Oh, look at the castle. How the jewels glitter!”

Henry’s eyes narrowed. “Are you seriously trying to distract me with something shiny?”

“Is it working?”

“No!”

“Then no, of course I’m not trying to distract you. That would be absurd.” Hatter tugged at the collar of his shirt, suddenly feeling as if it had tightened around his throat. “Perhaps we should go in to see Glinda. She’s the reason we’ve come here, isn’t she? She may know the answer to your question.”

“Hmph.” Henry cocked an eyebrow but turned in the direction of the two massive doors at the entrance to the castle.
