Chapter 5: Cheshire Cat
Rei’s rage was practically sparking. His voice was a dark rumble as he demanded, “What in the seven hearts of Hell do you think you’re doing?”
I shrugged nonchalantly. “Why are you so upset? I was a well-behaved gentleman and perfectly civil to the little prince. Isn’t that what you wanted?”
He narrowed his eyes at me. “What I want is for you to stay away from him.”
I approached him with a sway of my hips as my tail flicked behind me. “That sure sounds like jealousy to me.”
“Don’t be absurd.” Rei scoffed, as if it was the most ridiculous accusation in the world.
“You’re just mad because he liked me more than you.” I sprawled out in Rei’s lap, draping my arms over his neck to support myself. “If you send that charming boy home, you can have me all to yourself.”
My heart rejoiced when he automatically wrapped his arms around me to hold me closer. “You know I can’t do that.”
“No, you won’t do that, which is different.” I pouted as I looked up at him. “Why are you going through with this farce? When the prince is so sweet, it will make you feel bad to go through this stupid interview just to turn him down because you’re too in love with me. Your denial is making it worse.”
“I’ve never denied the fact that my heart belongs to you, Chess,” Rei said softly, stroking my arm with his thumb. “If I didn’t love you more than life itself, I wouldn’t struggle so much.”
It was equal parts sweet and frustrating. “Then when are you going to choose me and happiness instead of being alone and miserable?”
He looked at me with those wounded puppy eyes that broke my heart. “Please don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”
It was impossible to hold in my frustrated sigh. “I miss the days when you were actually happy to see me and not so vexed every time I appear.” I gestured around us. “There’s no one even here, yet you won’t even indulge me with one kiss.”
Rei’s gaze dropped to my lips. “Because one kiss will lead to one hundred more.”
“And the problem with that is what?” When Rei started with the same tired protests, I cut him off. “If the prince is a fan of mine, then doesn’t that prove the tide has turned on people’s opinion of me?”
“He is a sheltered boy who knows nothing of the real world.” The bitterness in Rei’s voice tugged on my heartstrings. “It’s only natural that stories of your misadventures would excite a child trapped in a palace with no hopes of ascending to the throne.”
It felt too cruel to point out that Rei had been that same carefree soul when I first met him as the young third prince who was never meant to be king. I tried to distract him instead. “If only he knew the truth about our sexy ‘misadventures’ we used to have.” I nuzzled against Rei’s neck, earning me a sharp inhale. “Come on, let’s go upstairs to start some new rumors.”
Wonderland Ever After, Book 2
Cheshire is determined to convince King Rei to give them a second chance at happily ever after. But what if the only way to do that is for the cat shifter to team up with his enemy?
I could sulk about King Rei choosing his duty to his kingdom over our relationship, but it’s way more fun to get payback by stealing his crowns. Of course, my favorite form of revenge is tempting my fated mate with what he could have if only he wasn’t so stubborn.
We’ve been playing our will-they-won’t-they game since he took the throne, but the stakes change when a rival prince arrives in Wonderland to try wooing away my beloved. As a master of mayhem and mischief, I’m prepared to chase off the unwanted interloper by any means necessary.
But I quickly discover that the little princeling isn’t what he seems. And what’s more ingenious than working with my enemy to catch Rei by surprise? After all, I said I’d do absolutely anything to win him back.
Will my efforts finally motivate Rei to let me claim him as my mate?
