Now that the holiday kerfuffle is over and it’s time to get back into the swing of things, sort of, many people take this as the time to reinvent themselves, start anew, make resolutions, that sort of thing. That’s great when it works for you, and I hope everyone who travels that path finds some success and fulfillment in their journey.

I’ve never been much for new years resolutions. Maybe I’ve learned not to set myself up for failure. For me, creating a new habit takes a long, long time. It’s like muscle memory, and trust me, I’m not great at developing that. After writing countless (literally, beyond counting) words in the pursuit of a writing career, I still have to look at the keyboard to type, and even then, the number of typos is astounding. So yeah. Muscle memory is not my greatest asset.

On the other hand, sometimes, we find ourselves reinventing our lives out of necessity. Whatever we’re doing currently just isn’t working and a change must happen if we are to survive. In life, this can be a terrifying proposition. It often involves momentous events. Career changes, babies, marriages, moving house, kids leaving the nest, divorces, illness, even death. Whether the changes are sought out or thrust upon us, a new, different life is inevitable.

Yet, this is what we write books about, and what we hope to find in the books we read. In the romance genre, especially, we’re looking for that momentous occasion in the lives of the characters that causes a much-needed life change resulting in a happier character, a happier life, and the prospect that happiness will last well beyond the end of the book.

And now for the segue—da-da-DA!—if you haven’t already, meet Pike and Eddie.

Pike, a ranch hand and stunt horse-back rider who’s trying desperately to cling to a life that isn’t serving him. In fact, it’s making him more miserable by the day.

And Eddie, an actor who’s constantly trying to force that momentous event that changes everything, but is really only self destructing in very public, very spectacular ways.

Little do they know that meeting each other is what will shove them into their new lives. Either they give up what’s hurting them and embrace, well, each other, or they remain miserable. This being a romance, you already know which one they’ll chose, but that isn’t entirely why we read romance, is it? It’s to go on the journey with them so that we can forget for a little while what our own travails are putting us through, and for the promise that all that effort is worth it in the end.
