What the fuck? Since when do I measure a total stranger for a bedmate on first glance?

Blame it on the sunset. Or maybe it’s been too long since I had some “alone time” in the shower.

Entranced, Monty moved closer. Usually, he needed to work up the nerve to speak to someone he found attractive, but now his normal reticence faded. He stopped a few feet away, not wanting to startle the man.

“Hi,” Monty greeted the stranger, hoping he didn’t sound as nervous as he felt. His optimism dimmed when he didn’t get a response.

“You’ve got a great seat to take in the view,” Monty said, surprised at himself for making small talk, something that usually came hard for him.

The stranger sat up quickly and tensed, eyes wide as they locked on Monty.

You can see me?

Monty froze as realization hit. Shit. He’s a ghost.

Before he could gather his wits, the blond man vanished.

“It’s okay,” Monty said to the empty space atop the bunker where the stranger had just been. “I’m not going to hurt you. I can see and talk to ghosts, but I’m not an investigator. I won’t let people bother you. If you’d like to talk, I’d like to listen.”

For Monty, that practically amounted to a speech. He couldn’t explain the urgency he felt to keep the ghost from running away, but he knew he needed another chance to make a good impression.

“Please come back. I’d like to see you again.”

No reply came. Monty shivered in the cold wind. He headed home since it was growing dark, but his mood had shifted to melancholy. The lighthouse’s automated beacon blinked brightly every few seconds, a guardian of the ships at sea.

Monty climbed the steps to the keeper’s cottage, just a few yards away from the tower, and reminded himself that his new home was one of his favorite parts of the job.

How did I get so lucky?
