Exclusive Excerpt

I follow Jem around the house as he sets up cameras in each room. Snatches of conversations and laughter drift around us, but Jem stays focused and professional. His hands are deft and sure as he sets up different gadgets, and it’s incredibly attractive. I’m attracted to men and women, but the common denominator has always been intelligence and capability, and Jem fulfils both of those criteria with miles to spare. His hands are heavily veined, with long fingers and blunt nails. An image of them holding my cock suddenly flashes through my mind, and I shift position awkwardly as the organ in question stirs.

Jem glances at me. “Okay?”

I nod. “Oh yes,” I say heartily. “Very much so.”

He slowly raises an eyebrow, and I try to distract him. “So, what’s that for?” I gesture at the gadget, forgetting that I have a hammer in my hand. I narrowly avoid braining myself.

His eyes sparkle with laughter, but he looks down at what looks like part of a dance floor from the seventies. “These are light markers.” He sets them down in the doorway of Pete and Wendy’s bedroom. “They’re programmed to go off when anything moves over them. Watch.”

He stands over them and then does the most incredibly dorky impression of John Travolta while singing “Night Fever”. His lips are pursed, and he sucks in his cheeks, adding a little spin to his gyrations and some sway to his hips. The bulbs immediately light up as if he’s at a disco.

I burst into loud laughter. “You’re such a twat,” I snort.

There’s a thump and the sound of running footsteps, and we both look up as Ben appears in the doorway.

“Alright?” he asks breathlessly. “Did you see something?”

Jem has stopped dancing and stands innocently holding a pair of pliers, an angelic look on his face.

“I thought I heard a noise,” Ben says.

“Was it like a donkey braying?” Jem asks sweetly.

Ben nods. “Yes, now that you mention it.”

I glare at Jem, who barely restrains his laughter. “It was just Will laughing.”

sceptic audio coverArcana Books, Book 1

As the best friend of a psychic, Will Buchanan can’t help but believe in the dead. It’s the living that he finds to be problematic. However, after a spate of betrayals, he finally has the chance of a new life within his grasp, and he’s not going to risk it for anyone or anything. Staying safe is the name of Will’s game.

Jem Dawson defines the word temporary. A talented cameraman, he’s here today and will undoubtedly be gone tomorrow chasing adventure and danger. But, while he’s in York, he’s made it clear he wants Will, and Will can’t help liking the charming daredevil.

This inconvenient attraction results in Will accompanying Jem to the site of a notorious poltergeist outbreak. A malevolent spirit has targeted a family, and now the ghost hunting team for whom Jem does camerawork are going to be locked down in the house for three days.

The house is strange and filled with sinister and violent undercurrents. One by one, the group experiences threatening incidents, and as events escalate, Will has to ask himself if he’s risking not just his heart but also his life with this impulsive gesture.

This is the first book in the Arcana Books series featuring characters from the bestselling Black and Blue series.
