His brain unhelpfully offered one reason after another why the stranger would be perfect “husband” material.

All of which might be true, but it doesn’t change my life, and it doesn’t change the world. But it’ll make a nice daydream.

A good dinner, two fingers of bourbon, and the rocking of the train made it easier to sleep sitting up than Owen had expected. He and his seatmate negotiated the space between them to unfold their legs as much as possible. If Owen appreciated every second of the accidental brushes and the times their knees knocked together, he made sure to keep it to himself.

When the lights dimmed to signal quiet time, the stranger rose to use the men’s room. Sliding out of his seat made his suitcoat catch on the velvet upholstery, and Owen caught a glimpse of a revolver in a holster underneath.

The stranger froze for just an instant, then continued as if nothing had happened. Owen stared after him as he made his way down the corridor, matching the train’s motion to keep his footing with the grace of an athlete.

His ass is as nice as I imagined it would be.

A more ominous thought followed. I know why I’m carrying a gun on a train. Why is he?

Several possibilities spun through Owen’s mind. US Marshal. Pinkerton. Private investigator. Hired security—the railroad sometimes puts plainclothes officers on trains if they expect trouble.

Train robber?

Owen had difficulty imagining his seatmate as a latter-day Billy the Kid. But he had to admit that no matter how charming the man seemed, he was a stranger. Before Owen joined the Supernatural Secret Service, he’d been a soldier in the County Seat Wars and the Cattle Wars out West. He’d seen suave killers and grouchy heroes, enough to know that appearances could be deceiving.

Shit. That ruins a perfectly good fantasy. Not to mention that now I’ll need to sleep with one eye open, just in case.

When the man returned, Owen availed himself of the facilities as well, but he was careful to keep his jacket from revealing his weapon. He wasn’t worried about being robbed. What little he had of value was in his locked valise in the overhead rack, and with the train at full speed his companion wouldn’t be leaving before morning.

When Owen returned to his seat, he had already moved his gun to a pocket so he could keep it on his lap overnight, just in case. The stranger was sprawled in his seat with his overcoat as a pillow but considerately left plenty of room for Owen’s long legs beneath the table that separated their forward and backward-facing seats.

Owen got comfortable and slipped his gun from his jacket to rest on his thighs.

The other man sighed but didn’t open his eyes. “I hope you aren’t planning to shoot me during the night. It’ll cause a ruckus and stain the seats.”
