“Go easy with that, Old Fox,” Ling Ling yelled as Húlí drank the whole glass of wine in one go. “That stuff goes straight to your head.”

That’s exactly what he wanted. Something that would erase the thoughts swimming around in his mind. It had been so long, why bring up his family now? And who exactly was doing that? That voice was his mother’s, he was sure of that. But how was that possible? And what was that cryptic order all about? Find my father? His father had long been dead way before all hell broke loose in the palace. Long before the old emperor had died.

He poured himself another glass. “I can hold my liquor,” he boasted with a chuckle. Despite the alcohol running through his system, he wasn’t drunk yet, but he would be, even if he had to drink all three bottles Ling Ling had brought from her travels. He took another swig.

“Stop.” Xiao Ying wrapped his long fingers around Fox’s wrist, preventing him from drinking again. “You’re being stupid. Drinking yourself into oblivion is not going to solve anything.”

As true as that was, Húlí didn’t care. His head hurt with difficult and sad memories stirred up by that voice. Why now? Why ever? His life was far from perfect, but he had managed a sort of rhythm independent from his past, from those who had hurt his family and still wished him ill. He had managed to leave Ming Xin behind, and now it all came storming back like a tidal wave of unwanted thoughts and feelings.

“Let me drink,” he said, fighting the other man’s hold. It didn’t work. Xiao Ying held fast to his wrist, his eyes intense on Húlí’s. “For fuck’s sake, Healer, let me go or….”

“Or what? You’ll kill me with your bad boozed breath?”

Fox jumped to his feet, his wrist still inside the other man’s hand, and looked up into Healer’s dark eyes. “Or I will seduce you right here, right now.”

Healer laughed. “I told you, your magic won’t work on me.”

The sudden upward move had managed to do what the wine hadn’t: it made him swoon, the whole world tilting away from him. He reached out with his free hand and held on to the other man’s tunic, afraid he would fall. “That’s what you say.” His voice was becoming slurred, and he smiled, happy he was finally drunk.

Xiao Ying growled softly. “Try me.”

Húlí studied the big man in front of him and wished he would stop swaying. He closed his fingers around his collar, steadying himself. “Stop moving.” Healer let loose a chuckle but didn’t stop wavering. Or was it the floor that moved? Húlí tightened his grip on the other man’s shirt and pulled himself closer and up onto his tiptoes until his face was almost level with Healer’s. “Stop. Moving.”

“Is that how you work your magic charm on your partners?” Xiao Ying taunted, his words a blast of warm air on Húlí’s face. “It doesn’t seem very effective.”

Trying to steady the movement, Húlí braced himself on the other man’s chest. “Ni kàn, Healer!” He licked his lips, his mouth suddenly very dry. “Look, you haven’t seen anything yet.” Was he slurring his speech?

“I’m waiting,” the tall man said, a tiny smile dancing in his eyes.
