Exclusive Excerpt

Noah went to his tent and gathered what needed to go back to town with him, leaving the rest of his camp in place for tomorrow night after closing up the tent. That would save him time tomorrow, which meant more opportunity to wield his best camera for key shots. And then I can go home…for a little while.

The hike out of the forest felt longer than it had on the way in. Despite his heavy clothing and the hot coffee, the weather had taken a toll. Noah no longer cared that his only options for dinner were the diner or what he could cook on a hot plate in his room. Any food would seem like the best he’d ever eaten after the long day he’d spent.

Noah loaded his Tahoe and blasted the heat, slowly feeling his hands and feet get warm again. The drive back to the motel lasted long enough for him to thaw. As the cell signal improved, his phone vibrated with missed messages.

He decided to drop off his equipment at the motel and get a hot shower before going for dinner. Noah unpacked and plugged everything in before he took time to use the bathroom and wash up, luxuriating under the steaming water. He toweled down, dressed in jeans, a tee, flannel shirt, and sweater, and pulled on a fresh pair of heavy wool socks.

Scanning the messages, he saw most were from Drew. A few others were business inquiries he’d handle later, possible new video projects. Two were from Rob.

Noah read down through the stream of texts from Drew, chiding himself for feeling like a giddy teenager. Some were funny memes, others snide comments about a particular customer who gave the garage a hard time. Still more were replies to the texts Noah had managed to send on the shoot, and a request for new video snippets and outtakes.

Noah: Got some amazing footage tonight. One more night in the cold and I can go back to my apartment. Wish I was coming home to you.

He groaned when he saw what he’d texted, hoping he didn’t sound too lovesick.

Drew: Wish I were there to warm you up. Prevent hypothermia—sleep naked with your boyfriend.

 Noah: Miss you. Want you.

He hesitated, knowing what he wanted to say, but fearing it was still too soon.

Noah: Care about you, he texted instead. Stay warm. Gonna need that body heat when I visit.

Drew: I’ll make sure it’s plenty hot when you get here. Hurry back.

Noah sent several smiles, eggplants, and other emojis that he hoped described what was on his mind. Thanks to his constant texting and sexting with Drew, Noah had gotten better at sending explicit messages with emojis, although he still lacked confidence. With my luck, I think I’ve sent him an explicit message and I’ve really said something utterly ridiculous.
