Blood clung in thick, wet clumps to my midnight-black fur as I dragged the heavy bear carcass into the open. The beast’s flesh would be tough, but it was a shame to let it go to waste. I had managed to drain every last drop of the brown bear’s blood, without sustaining any injury, and my thirst was finally quenched for now.
The trick to hunting such a large creature was to attack from on high, to swoop down and deliver a deadly bite that would leave the prey helpless. As I looked to the sky, the moon shone down on me with an eerie light, casting deep shadows across the forest floor. Its song of sleepy renewal hinted that it was time to return to the school before the morning light came.
Letting out a weary sigh, I started my descent down the rugged mountain slope, weaving my way through the thick bushes of Buddleia and Oleander that grew protectively around me. Even in these lands, where the watchful gods ruled supreme, I could find shelter from their piercing gaze.
Being larger than the average wolf, my agility was far swifter, and my power far deadlier than almost any other. As I leaped over fallen trees and bounded across the undergrowth, the trees cast flickering shadows on the forest floor, creating ghostly visions of monsters long forgotten.
