When a wiry, young man suddenly stepped in front of them, Max automatically put an arm across Leo’s chest to stop his forward momentum, much like a mother restraining a child. He glanced over at him. “Sorry. It’s a reflex.”
Leo nodded and looked back at the man; Max followed his lead. The skinny guy wasn’t very old and on closer inspection, Max realized he was probably a teenager, definitely no older than sixteen or seventeen. His clothes looked rather new, and his hair was almost clean. He wore smudges of dirt on his skin the way most of the residents down here did, but he didn’t smell bad. Max had a feeling he’d been one of the lucky ones who were awarded one of the few beds in one of the local missions…at least last night.
“Didn’t mean to scare ya,” he said. “Uh, sorry I stole your doorknob last night. I was trippin’ balls, and thought it was a mushroom.” He grinned at them, held up a dirty McDonalds bag, and pivoted, walking away from them with a bouncy gait.
“What the hell?” Leo muttered.
Max chuckled. “God, I love my job.”
Leo simply shook his head and held his hand out toward a row of tents. “Lead on.”
Max nodded and they approached an open tent flap at the first flimsy dwelling. Leo bent at the waist to speak to the person inside. The cross-legged occupant was a man of about fifty with matted, gray hair and ashy, dark skin. Dirt had settled permanently into the crevices on his face and the smell coming from the tent was pungent enough to drive away only the most committed FBI agent. Leo held out a stack of photos.
“My name is Leo and I’m looking for these folks. They’re not in any trouble but they might be sick or injured and I want to get them some medical attention if that’s the case. Would you take a look and see if any of them look familiar to you?”
The man blinked up at Leo as Max walked over to stand beside him. “Where’s your ship?”
“I’m…sorry?” Leo said.
“Your spaceship. Where is it?” The man looked up at Max. “Where’s your ship?”
Max glanced down at his clothing, noting the all black jeans, T-shirt, and leather jacket he’d put on that morning. Leo was similarly attired in blue jeans, a red button down, and a brown leather jacket. They certainly didn’t look like spacemen although he was beginning to think this assignment had all the hallmarks of being out of this world.
Leo straightened and glanced over at him. Max watched him shrug, clearly at a loss for words. Max nodded at him before glancing at the older man. He pointed down the block. “We landed it in the all-day pay parking lot. You know, the one for twenty dollars a day?”

FBI Files, Book 4
Things aren’t always what they seem.
Special agent, Max Prince, and his boyfriend, Dr. Leo Reeves, are back to work after their first case together. When a prominent Department of Defense scientist kills himself in a mysterious way, their entire FBI team is tasked to figure out if the weapon he was working on was somehow the cause of his death. Things get even more interesting when SAC Lincoln Snow calls in old friends to help. Damon Thorne, formerly of the CIA, and Jarrett and Thayne from the ATF step up help on the premise that their case might have a link to biological terrorism.
It’s so much worse.
Seventy years ago, the CIA began an illegal human experimentation program, code named MKUltra, and the more Leo and Max learn about what Dr. Cummings has been doing for the DOD, the closer they draw parallels to the defunct program. These experiments aren’t the only things the government scientist has been working on. When Jarrett and Thayne go exploring at his house, they discover a secret room which promises to reveal the true nature of what’s happening…and it’s worse than they could’ve imagined.
Evil always targets the most vulnerable.
Just when they think they’ve figured out what’s going on, an old nemesis from the FBI steps in with instructions to shut it all down and take over. All Max knows is, the sudden appearance of a guy their whole team hates, can’t be good, especially when he starts throwing his weight around. Something else is going on here and a cover up is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. To top it all off, an embarrassing ex, an accidental poisoning, multiple break ins, and a couple of bad guys acting like ninjas, add to the utter chaos of this case which promises to be stranger than life on Mars. After all—
Truth is stranger than fiction.
