Exclusive Excerpt

He bites his lip, his eyes extraordinarily keen, and I wonder what he sees when he looks at me. Then he gives me a smile that makes me relax. “I’ll start,” he says. He winks at me. “I have to say the game might be interesting because I can’t spell to save my life.” I laugh, charmed by his self-deprecating humour. He looks around at the rows of stationary cars. “I spy with my little eye something beginning with T.”

The sun highlights his soft blond hair, the glow looking a little like a halo for a rather debauched saint. My gaze lands on his, and his eyes are full of sympathy.

“What?” I snap.

“It’s okay if you can’t think of anything,” he says, patting me on my hand.

“I can guess,” I say. I tear my eyes away from his face and look wildly around. “Erm, T for Toyota,” I say, eyeing the car in front of us. Dance music blares from its open windows and, as we watch, the driver throws a McDonalds bag out of the window. “And for twat,” I add.

“That’s two guesses, but I’ll allow it,” he says magnanimously.

My mouth twitches. “Thank you.” Silence descends, and I stir. “And?”

He jumps. “What?”

“Were they the right guesses?”

“Oh, sorry, no.” He smiles kindly. “I’m sure you’ll get it eventually. I’ll give you twenty guesses.”

I bite my lip, all my competitive instincts rising to the fore. “I’m sure I won’t need that many,” I say in a confident tone of voice. However, after ten minutes of increasingly wild guesses, that surety is being tested. Finally, after the latest refusal, I say, “I give up. What is it?”

“Really? You can’t think?”

“Dean, I have guessed everything in the near vicinity, and they were all wrong.”

“I’m not very good at geography, but I’m pretty sure the Taj Mahal isn’t on the M25.”

“It’s a restaurant not far from here,” I lie smoothly, and his mouth twitches.

“Oh, of course.”

“So what is it? I can’t wait to know,” I add.

“Oh, T for the thong I’m wearing,” he says and sits back, his expression happy.

“I’m sorry. I’d swear you just said thong, Dean.”

“I did.” He nods, smiling. “That’s definitely a word I know, seeing as I modelled that skimpy underwear collection last year.” I gulp at the memory of his long bare length stretched out in sheets, the full globes of his buttocks rising. “Can’t believe you didn’t get it,” he adds, and I grit my teeth.

“Neither can I, as the rules clearly state—”

“There are rules?”

“Yes, and they state that all Eye Spy targets should be within eye range.”

“Like the Taj Mahal?”

“Yes. I—” I start to laugh helplessly as he watches me, his eyes bright. “Fucker,” I finally say, and he laughs, the sound warm and merry.
