Simon
“Sorry,” Vic said. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It goes with a fresh murder and the whole cop thing,” Simon replied. “Find anything?”
“A lot of information—not sure if it’s going to shake out to be clues yet or not.” Vic sighed.
“Sheldon’s house gave me the creeps—and I don’t even have your abilities. I was hoping we could coast this last week before the wedding without any chance of either of us getting hurt. Guess that was too much to ask for.”
“I imagine that would be easy for plenty of people in other professions. But I talk to dead people and you’re a cop.”
“And we’re good at what we do, and our jobs are important,” Vic replied. “I know that. I’d just like to be unimportant for the next couple of weeks.”
“Maybe we’ll get to the bottom of this murder and things will be quiet for a while. Hey, we can hope, right?”
Vic directed Simon to Sheldon’s house. Ross was waiting in his car outside.
“Don’t be surprised if you get the third degree from the neighbors who weren’t around when we did interviews yesterday,” Ross said when he joined them on the sidewalk. “Four retirees stopped to ask me why I was ‘loitering.’ On the plus side, once they found out I was a cop, they were happy to talk about the ‘weird’ magician and his ‘creepy’ house.”
“Oh yeah?” Vic asked as Simon stood a few feet away, trying to tune into the house with his psychic abilities while still listening to the others talk.
“Nothing concrete—just neighborhood gossip,” Ross replied. “Sheldon didn’t socialize. When he was still performing he’d be gone for long periods of time, but since he retired he barely left the house. Lights were on at odd hours, and he didn’t bother to get to know the neighbors even though most folks on this street have lived here forever.”
“Guess it wasn’t a surprise that someone reported the screams to the police, if they’ve got a real Neighborhood Watch thing going,” Vic remarked. “Sounds like they keep a close eye on things.”
“I got names and phone numbers in case we have questions. I think this is the most excitement to happen here in a long while.”
“Picking up anything?” Vic moved to stand beside Simon as he tried to get a read on the house. Most of the time, Simon didn’t have trouble sensing ghosts or psychic energy. Light magic bubbled like champagne, while dark power felt like blood. He picked up traces of both, but heavily muted.
“Yeah—but it’s strange. Maybe I’ll have a better idea of what we’re dealing with when we get inside,” Simon replied.
He had insisted that they carry protections in the magician’s house. Simon, Vic, and Ross all had amulets that deflected offensive magic—powerful enough to have saved their lives more than once. He’d gotten Vic and Ross to keep bags of salt in the pockets of their jackets and to carry iron weapons—a length of rebar, a wrench, or a crowbar—as well as their guns. Bullets wouldn’t stop ghosts—but iron and salt were formidable protection.
Blurb
Badlands, Book 6
Sexy psychic Simon Kincaide and skeptical homicide detective Vic D’Amato are getting married–if the ghost of a murderous magician doesn’t get them first!
Simon and Vic’s wedding is just a few weeks away, and they’re hoping for a little peace and quiet to wrap up work before their honeymoon, but nothing ever goes that smoothly.
Strange circumstances around the death of a retired stage magician suggest supernatural involvement, bringing Simon in on the case. The dark secrets of a long-ago resort hotel lead to a trail of unsolved cold cases that have a chilling similarity. Old scandals, malicious magic, and vengeful spirits expose a web of lies, deceit, and death that is headed for a reckoning.
Can Simon and Vic solve the murders, stop the ghosts, keep Simon’s mother from crashing the party, dodge last-minute wedding disasters, and still make it to the altar on time? Or will the shadows of Myrtle Beach’s haunted past ruin everything?
