“Toby, can you give me a second? Demon wants to go outside.”

“Be sure to give that gorgeous fellow a hug for me.”

Biscuit opened the door leading to their eight hundred square foot deck. Demon scurried down the deck stairs into his favored spot to take care of his elimination duties. Biscuit sat in an Adirondack chair to keep an eye on Demon, whose routine always included exploration of a yard that continued to fascinate him daily.

With no transition whatsoever, but with a purpose he hoped Toby could easily discern, Biscuit launched into a nostalgic recollection of the high school band trip they took to the Mardi Gras many years ago. “Remember how all of us were required to sleep on air mattresses at the New Orleans National Guard Armory? Boys on one side of the huge room—might have been a gym; I don’t recall for sure—and girls on the other. We slept so close to one another, you and I, it was hard as hell for me to keep my hands off you. Especially after the cock play we’d enjoyed just two months prior at the chicken barbecue and my fantasies that followed.”

“Sure wish I’d known about the torment you were experiencing. I know we were surrounded by assloads of other guys, but we had blankets. And hands are pretty easy to hide beneath them.”

“Okay, Toby. Stop. I’m getting all hot and bothered.”

A short lull in the conversation while Biscuit opened the door for Demon, who trotted to his water bowl. Biscuit tossed him a pizzle stick, which he caught in mid-air, then poured himself a glass of cabernet sauvignon.

“And then, several months later, just like that, we went our separate ways. It was the saddest day of my life.”

Biscuit clicked his tongue against the back of his incisors as he recalled how hurt and even resentful he felt when he’d first heard the news of his friend’s imminent departure. “Well, Toby, your separate way was more extreme than mine. Still, even with you in New York, fraternizing with who knows how many hot boys at Columbia, I still carried the torch. The spell you cast on me wasn’t broken, even after you boarded that fucking Delta.”

Abruptly, he stumbles on the news that this high-school crush is married to someone else. Then, yet another discovery: There just might be a glimmer of hope. But even if things work out between them, how can they blend two lives separated by a dozen years and seven hundred miles? Can Toby ever hope to claim his own private Biscuit?
