Exclusive Excerpt
Ket reached down to pick up something on the rocks Eron hadn’t noticed. It was a rough shell, some kind of mollusk, he guessed. Ket pried open the shell with ease and held it out to him.
Inside the shining nacre, two pink pearls sat on a bed of soft, still-damp seaweed, identical in size, shape, and color. Eron inhaled sharply. “Ket…”
The mer gazed hopefully back at him, and Eron felt heat behind his eyes. “You’re going to make me cry, silly fish.”
Ket frowned at that, reaching up to stroke Eron’s cheek. Eron turned his head to press a kiss to Ket’s damp palm before holding out his hand, and Ket placed the shell lovingly into it. It was rough but warm and slightly heavy, the pearls glinting in their little bed of green. “They’re beautiful,” he breathed, looking up into Ket’s eyes.
Ket hesitantly slid over Eron’s lap before reaching up to cup his face. Eron held still, letting Ket control the movement even as his heart fluttered in his chest. Ket gazed solemnly at him before lifting up Eron’s hand and meshing their fingers together as best he could with the membranes between his fingers. He then leaned in, and his lips pressed to Eron’s in a sweet but firm kiss. Eron’s breath caught in his throat, and he held Ket close. “All right,” he agreed, stroking a hand over Ket’s cheek. “You and me together.” Ket beamed at him. Eron hesitated for a moment. “Ket… I love you.”
Ket let out a screech and threw his arms around Eron, nearly knocking them both over. Eron caught the wiggly mer and held him close, Ket peppering his face with kisses and nose touches until he finally had to push the mer away so he could take a breath. “Wow. Thank you?” Ket giggled and fluttered his ear fins playfully. Eron gave him another kiss. “How do you say ‘I love you’ in your language?”
Ket let out a series of clicks that ended with a little chirp. Eron raised a brow. “Um, I’m going to have to work on that one.”

Kit Barrie (she/her) was raised by pirates in a traveling carnival where she learned how to fly and to weave fantasy into reality. She identifies as chaotic bisexual, with good intentions and questionable methods. She lives in an utterly unfantastical state in the Midwestern United States with her very supportive spouse (VSS) and at least 4 food goblins who might just be cats gobblin’ food.
