I give myself a shake when I realize that my thoughts have gone off course and that the silence between me and Connor has dragged on just a little too long to be comfortable.
“Sorry,” I apologise sheepishly. “Got lost in thought there.”
Connor dismisses my apology with a wave. “We all do that.” After a beat, he starts to say something else, but is interrupted by a sharp, agitated barking of his name.
We turn in unison to see his boyfriend -Anton? Andrew? Alex?- striding down the short corridor from the elevator. The guy looks the same as he has every other time I’ve seen him. About my height, lean and toned, the smooth lines of his body emphasised by the perfect tailoring of his no doubt expensive as fuck suit. He’s got dark hair and eyes, and his handsome, cleanshaven face is set into an unimpressed scowl.
“The fuck are you doing?” he demands of Connor as he gets closer, ignoring me entirely. He makes a show of checking his shiny silver coloured watch. It’s probably also ridiculously expensive. “We’ve got dinner with Michaels and the O’Rourkes in thirty fucking minutes and there’s no way in hell you’re wearing that.”
Connor’s cheeks flush and he tears his gaze away from me, his embarrassment palpable. I want to reach out, hold him close and assure him that the only person who should be embarrassed right now is the asshole berating him.
What a douche.
“Sorry,” Connor murmurs, and I feel a pang of tumultuous emotions when the light in his eyes seems to dim. His shoulders slump inwards and his smile turns brittle. “I must have lost track of time.”
The douche huffs impatiently then, after a beat, widens his eyes and gives an incredulous shake of his head. “Well? Hurry your arse up.”
Jesus Christ, who the fuck does this guy think he is?
I clear my throat. Two sets of eyes turn on me. One hazel and cautious, the other dark brown and irritated.
Good. Let the fucker be irritated. I raised two rambunctious boys through their terrible toddlerhoods and even moodier teen years – this guy can’t rattle me.
Pasting on my smarmiest smile, I extend my hand to the douche in a suit. “I’m sorry, I don’t think we’ve met properly. I’m Will. I-”
“Own the apartment directly above us, yes, I’m aware.” Douchey McDoucheface makes no move to take my hand. He trails his gaze over me with a practiced sort of arrogance, starting at the worn sneakers on my feet, over the grey station-issued sweatpants and black t-shirt, then finally to my face. He seems to find me wanting, but I couldn’t give a rat’s ass. “Can I help you?”
Connor groans. “Anthony,” he chastises, “you interrupted our conversation. Don’t be a dick.”
Anthony swivels his head back sharply and snaps, “Why aren’t you heading upstairs to get dressed yet?”
I grind my teeth. What the ever-loving fuck does Connor see in this guy?
I want so badly to put Anthony in his place, but one look at the dejection on Connor’s face stops me. It’s not going to make things any better for him if I tell this dick that he can’t order his boyfriend around. So, as badly as I’d like to demand Anthony treat Connor with more respect, I bow out gracefully.
Clapping Connor on the shoulder, I tell him I’ll see him around. “Give Daisy my best, too,” I add as I make my way to the stairwell. I hope the three flights of stairs will help burn off some of my anger. It doesn’t work, and the sounds of the two men arguing in my wake follow me up until I reach the first landing.
Nevertheless, I am feeling marginally calmer when I reach my apartment.
Blurb
Dads & Adagese, Book 1
…There’s A Way.
Connor and Will are at vastly different points in their lives.
At 32, Connor Stark’s life is pretty great. With a handsome boyfriend, a thriving business as an Events Coordinator, and a vibrant social life set against the stunning backdrop of Australia’s Gold Coast, he has very few complaints. Hell, he even has eye candy in the form of his uniformed silver fox upstairs neighbour, not that he’d ever do anything more than perv on the guy.
Then one day tragedy strikes, and Connor is thrust into single parenthood as he is handed a newborn baby and what feels like zero lifelines.
Meanwhile, at 49, perpetually single firefighter Will Bradford’s life is also pretty great. Though his hair might be more silver than brown these days, he has a rewarding job, amazing grown-up kids, and an adorable downstairs neighbour he probably shouldn’t be checking out as often as he does. So sue him; he’s only human.
When Connor’s life is turned upside down overnight, Will finds himself helping the younger man navigate his new reality. He has no intention of falling butt over teakettle for Connor or his kid, but somehow it happens anyway.
With Connor a broken man, and Will concerned about restarting the whole parenting gig from scratch, how can they make a relationship work, especially when life seems intent on throwing even more hurdles their way?
Bio
I’ve been writing* for as long as I can remember. I started with silly short stories as a kid, moved on to fanfiction in my teens (and still write it now), and am also a published MF romance author under a second pen name.
I have been an avid reader of MM romance my whole life. (Ask me about my beginnings with Buffy fanfic, haha.) I wrote a sweet and kinky MM romance novel in 2021 and the reader response changed my life. From there, I knew I had found my niche.
And thus Anna Sparrows was born.
*All of my writing is 100% my own. No part of it is generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) software of any kind. Yes, that means that it’s sometimes flawed, but I’m okay with that.
