The Bet:

“What if we make a bet?”

“You don’t like to bet. Usually, I have to goad you into it.”

“So you don’t want to?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Good, so if I win, you take that painting home with you.”

“And if I win?” I ask sitting back down across from him.

“If you win, you can be my plus one on this cruise.”

“I can what now?” He can’t be serious.

“If you win, you can come on the cruise. I’ll change the room to two queen beds, it’ll be fun. You said it yourself.”

“You’re serious?”

“I don’t make jokes, you know that.”

“What would the bet be?”

Marcus moves forward on the chair, finishes what’s left in his third, and hopefully last, glass, and holds out a closed fist.

“Best of three wins.”

“You want to play scissors, paper, rock?”

“Why not? I’ve got a fifty-fifty chance of getting that thing out of here.”

With everything going on at work, I could really use the time away. My father’s been riding me for weeks about stepping up and using the law degree he repeatedly reminds me I’m wasting. I’m supposed to move back to the city and do exactly that by the end of the year. It was the deal I made with him when I left the city in the first place. Make my own stamp on the world in whatever field I want, or take my place in Finch and Finch Law Firm.

After Grandpa died, it should have been renamed just Finch but I passed the bar and so he gave me an office and it remained Finch and Finch. I can’t believe the five-year timeframe we agreed to is over already. Fuck. Am I really considering playing Marcus for a ticket onboard his cruise? He’s a little drunk, but it’s scissors, paper, rock. You don’t have to be entirely sober to play.

“If I win, I also get to buy my own room.”

He stumbles from his chair shaking his head. That last drink hit him hard.

“Nope.”

“You realize you’re the one asking me to come with you, so shouldn’t I be the one to make the conditions?”

“You’re just trying to find reasons not to come if you win. I bet you’re trying to think up an excuse right now, aren’t you?”

I hate that he knows me so well. He has a way of seeing through my shit.

“Okay. I’m in.”

“Great, let’s do this,” he says, sitting back down and holding out his closed fist again.

“Scissors… Paper… Rock… Shoot.”

“You win,” I say, smiling down at where his scissors cut my paper. Maybe that painting will come home with me. Where should I put it? Maybe the bedroom.

“You still have a chance. You call it this time.”

“Scissors… Paper… Rock… Shoot.”

“Ha, see?” He laughs, and I tap his scissors with my closed fist for the win.

“This is it, the winner takes all.” He sways a little, and I nearly reach out to grab him, but he rights himself at the last second.

“Okay, call it before you pass out, old man.”

That gets the look. The one that sends a flurry of nerves through my gut and makes my dick take notice. How does he not know he’s even fucking hotter than Henry Cavill? That percing gaze rips through me every fucking time.

“Scissors… Paper… Rock… Shoot.”

I throw out scissors, and there’s a moment I’m sure I see his hand throw paper, but then his closed fist taps my hand.

Before I can call him out for cheating, he cheers, “You win!” then stumbles again.

Blurb

whiskey business coverLove in No Man’s Land Series, Book 3

When Marcus suggests we make a bet and if I win I get his ex’s ticket on a four day cruise, I’m not sure he’s for real. He doesn’t like to gamble and he hates to lose even more than I do. Yet, the allure of sharing a room with him for four glorious days is too tempting to resist.

To my surprise, I win, and Marcus doesn’t resist the outcome. It’s almost like he actually wanted to lose. But that would be crazy, right?

Things take an even wilder turn when Marcus’s mom mistakes me for his fiancé, and neither of us corrects her. Now, his whole family believes we’re engaged, and we’re caught in a tangled mess of lies, with even his brother and our friends joining the charade.

Amidst the chaos, I have to admit that this plan might just be the best idea I’ve ever had. Well, except for our little rehearsal of a staged kiss, just in case we need to perform it in front of his family. That was the best idea ever, because with his hands on my waist and his mouth on mine I’m starting to think this fake relationship might be more real than either of us thought.

But when a past hookup threatens to expose everything, it forces Marcus to choose between revealing the truth or pretending I’m just like his former flame.

Can our fake relationship survive reality, or will it crumble under the weight of secrets and revelations?
